Texas gets an own goal and scores from sophomores Katie Glenn and Alexa Adams in the triumph
AUSTIN, Texas – On a blisteringly hot Sunday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium, Texas soccer (2-1-0) completed an unbeaten tournament weekend, getting benefit of an own goal and scores from sophomore midfielder Katie Glenn and sophomore forward Alexa Adams in knocking off Detroit (1-2-0), 3-1.
Glenn's goal marked both the first score and points of her career for the Burnt Orange & White and came with just one second remaining on the first half clock.
Adams managed a goal in her second-consecutive contest to now lead the Longhorns with two tallies in 2016 and already boasts eight tallies over her 21-match UT career. The Lancaster, Calif., native has registered at least one point in eight of Texas' last 10 contests, dating back to last season, and has scored seven times over her last 10 shots on goal for a 70% scoring efficiency.
Texas sophomore midfielder Nakia Graham and freshman forward Tecora Turner each recorded both their initial assists and points on the Forty Acres, while senior midfielder Julia Dyche picked up her first helper of the campaign on Glenn's opening score at 44:59.
Texas out-shot the Titans by a commanding total of 19-4 and led 8-2 in shots on goal, while Detroit managed a 4-1 edge on corner kicks.
From the start of the match, Texas mounted early pressure in the offensive third, but it was Detroit that registered the first shot as forward Anna Mindling fired well high on an ambitious try from 30-plus yards out at 7:14.
The Longhorns opening effort of the contest was also from distance as junior midfielder Morgan Murphy tried her luck from 25 yards out but had it blocked.
The Burnt Orange & White continued pressuring the Titan defense, coming close to pay dirt in the 25th minute. Off a cross from the left wing into the middle, the ball ricocheted off the hands of Detroit keeper Marina Manzo and bounced right out in the middle of the 18. With the sphere dropping right to her feet, Adams fired quickly but watched a Titan defender clear her effort off the line for a team save. A follow-up attempt on the rebound by Adams proved high of the bar and out of play.
Down the stretch in the opening half, Detroit got more into the game possession-wise, earning a pair of corners at 29:09 and 40:59, but couldn't get off a shot.
With time growing short on the first stanza clock, Dyche got the ball just past midfield and launched a pass ahead into the 18. With a defender draped on her right side, Glenn dove, getting the slightest of touches on the feed with her head before colliding with the net minder as the shot trickled into the net with just one second left in the half.
Out of the break, Texas continued to have the run of play, as shots by Adams, senior forward Jasmine Hart and Dyche were saved, wide right and blocked away, respectively, over the opening 7:59.
During the 57th minute, Adams worked hard up the right wing to draw a foul in a dangerous position near the right end line. Freshman defender Emma Jett stepped up and drove a low feed into the six-yard box. Unfortunately for the Titans, a sliding attempt by defender Kaitlan Vossan, while attempting to clear the ball out of danger, was turned into her net for an own goal to give Texas a 2-0 advantage.
Introduced into the contest as a Texas sub during the 60th minute, freshman forward Kyra Falcone immediately made her presence felt up top, forcing Manzo into two saves, the last on a volleyed effort from 12 yards out that required a keeper tip up and over the crossbar.
Still looking for more insurance, the Longhorns got it in the 73rd minute. Turner started the play with a pass from the left side of the 18 back to Graham at the top left edge. The Austin, Texas, native delivered a ball across the box to Adams who headed a try on frame that ricocheted off the right post and rolled almost all the way across the goal mouth before trickling in to make it 3-0.
Desperate for a goal to try to get back in the match, Detroit had a solid chance in the 77th minute as a ball off the hands of UT keeper Paige Brown was deflected back out into the middle of the 18. A shot from midfielder Kristen Tobin was driven well over the bar, however, for a harmless goal kick.
The Titans broke up the shutout with just 3:35 remaining in regulation as Mindling possessed a ball on the left wing, drove middle inside the 18 and fired a 10-yard shot that barely eluded a leaping try by Brown.
That was as close as Detroit could get the rest of the way as the Longhorns effectively wasted the final ticks on the clock in securing a 3-1 victory and an unbeaten weekend.
Texas Post-Match Quotes – Aug. 28 – Detroit
Texas head coach Angela Kelly
On what she thought of today's game: Well, you know, I'm really proud of the fact that we were able to score that first goal in the last 10 seconds of the half. It's something that we really, really highlight and talk about is closing out a half and every half, the beginning and the closing of each half. The ball was in our end with 20 seconds left and Katie makes a 50-yard sprinting run. Julia has the capacity to receive the ball and get it into the danger area and then Katie was there to challenge, and there you have it. What a different feeling, to take a goal into the half. And then, you know I thought we had moments of doing some good things. Some good individual performances, we strung together a couple of good series. I would have loved to have had a couple of more finishes in the back of the net, but overall it's two wins on a weekend, and that's becoming increasingly difficult to do in our league and the NCAA. I'm proud of the way our girls battled on a Sunday.
On what she learned about her team, that she might not have known coming in on Friday: I think I knew a lot about them. I think we have a lot of promise. We have a lot of players that have a tremendous amount of upside. We have great leadership, and I think we have a desire to win, and we're gonna keep plugging away. It's three and a half weeks into the season, and two weeks back-to-back, so we're really pleased with the response from last week versus Seattle to this weekend. We're gonna take that and obviously continue to get better.
Texas sophomore forward Alexa Adams
On the team's offensive success: I think we worked really hard this week at practice, and I think we came out with a better mentality this week, so that's why we were able to perform well in the offensive third. I think the whole team played really well and were able to get the ball to us so we were able to score.
On how the team stayed poised and disciplined on offense: Just having a "never give up" mentality. We missed a couple, but we knew we had other opportunities to score. We just have to focus on the next one and bury it.
Texas sophomore midfielder Katie Glenn
On her goal at the end of the first half: We had 10 or so seconds left, and there's never really too little time to score. She (Julia) just served it up, and I just tried to get something on it.
On what the team is looking forward to next week: Just getting wins again. It feels good to come away with two wins this weekend. Like Ange said, we just have to stay on top and continue to work hard throughout the week.
