EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – Four of five Texas golfers carded a round under par Monday and the Longhorns surged into a tie for second place after a record-setting second day at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate at Olympic Hills Golf Club.
As a team, Texas recorded a score of 274 in Monday's second round, which tied the school's 18-hole team record set just six days ago. The Longhorns were 14-under-par as a team, which set a new school record. Texas currently stands in a tie for second place with a two-under-par two-round total of 574 (300-274). No. 1 Arkansas leads the tournament field at six-under-par 570 (288-282), while the Longhorns are tied with No. 16 Stanford (294-280).
Texas avoided many of the inclement weather issues that plagued the tournament field on Sunday, but the play was halted for 84 minutes mid-afternoon due to rain. The Longhorns, who had the 9 a.m. CT tee times Monday, had completed their rounds before the weather delay.
Senior Sophia Schubert, the 2017 U.S. Women's Amateur Champion playing in her first tournament this season with the Longhorns, fired a five-under-par 67 on Monday and currently is in a tie for fifth place overall with a three-under-par 141 (74-67). Schubert was one stroke shy of her best Texas round of 66 and sits just three strokes back of the individual leader, Natalie Srinivasan of Furman (138, -6), with one round to play. Schubert finished the day with seven birdies in the second round.
Sophomore Emilee Hoffman, who recorded top-25 finishes in each of the Longhorns' first two tournaments this season, is tied for 12th overall with a one-under-par two-round total of 143 (75-68). Hoffman logged a four-under-par 68 on Monday after setting the school record with a 64 last Tuesday in the final round of the Schooner Fall Classic. She totaled seven birdies on Monday.
Sophomore Greta Isabella Voelker turned in a season-best round of 69 (-3) and is currently in a tie for 20th place with a two-over-par total of 146 (77-69). Voelker had four birdies on Monday and totaled a score of par-or-better on 17 of her 18 holes in the second round.
Freshman Kaitlyn Papp, who has finished in the top-20 of each of her first two collegiate tournaments, is in a tie for 24th place with a three-over-par 147 (77-70). Papp turned in her third bogey-free round in eight outings as a collegiate golfer. She had two birdies on the day and 16 pars. Papp's 30 pars so far in the ANNIKA Intercollegiate is tied for the lead among the tournament's individual field.
Freshman Agathe Laisne, competing in her first collegiate event after missing the first two tournaments to compete in The Evian Championship, one of five LPGA majors, is currently in a tie for 28th place with a four-over-par 148 (74-74).
The final round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate begins at 9:50 a.m. CT on Tuesday. Live results will be available here: http://results.golfstat.com//public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=participants&tid=13891.
TEXAS QUOTES
Senior Sophia Schubert
On her second-round 67 (-5) …
"My round was really good. I was striking the ball great - I haven't hit the ball this well in a while. I had six tap-in birdie opportunities, I missed one of them but overall it was really good."
Sophomore Emilee Hoffman
On her second-round 68 (-4) …
"Today was great. Individually, I was really patient on the greens. I recognized when I could play aggressive and conservative on holes and picked really good spots."
On four of the five Texas golfers shooting under par on Monday …
"As a team, we have a great group of girls this year. I believe we have a chance to compete against the best teams in the country. Everyone on our team is capable of shooting under par and it feels great when as a group, we all perform as best as we can that day."
Freshman Kaitlyn Papp
On her second-round 70 (-2) …
"I focused a lot better today. I don't think I missed a fairway and I was hitting a ton of greens so it was easy to make a lot of pars. I went bogey free - which I was happy with, especially after going birdie free yesterday."
Sophomore Greta Isabella Voelker
On the team effort on Monday …
"We just started the season and all of us do our best to make the team stronger. We are looking forward to this year because there's even more to come."
