No. 11 Women's Golf finishes third at Battle at the Beach
11.05.2017 | Women's Golf
Senior Sophia Schubert records her best 54-hole total of the season.
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The No. 11 Texas women's golf team posted a third-place finish Sunday at the Battle at the Beach, contested at Club Campestre San Jose Golf Club to conclude the fall portion of the team's schedule. The Longhorns recorded a four-under-par three-round total of 848 (286-281-281) to record their fourth top-five finish in five fall tournaments.
No. 1 UCLA claimed the Battle at the Beach with a 13-under-par 839 (282-285-272), while Oklahoma was second with a 10-under-par 842 (281-281-280). The Longhorns finished the tournament with 175 pars to lead the field and were third among teams with 48 birdies. Texas also was one of only four teams to record an eagle on the weekend.
Senior Sophia Schubert recorded her third top-10 individual finish in three tournaments this fall with a four-under-par 209 (70-68-71) to tie for fourth. She posted a tournament-best 41 pars and also had nine birdies on the weekend. The 209 tied for the fifth-best 54-hole total in program history. Schubert holds the program record for a 54-hole total at 203, but the 209 was her best tournament total of the 2017-18 season. Eight of her nine 18-hole rounds this season have been at par or better.
Freshman Kaitlyn Papp charted her second top-10 individual finish of the season, placing 10th with a one-under-par 212 (71-72-69). Papp's two-under-par 69 in Sunday's final round marked the second-best 18 holes of her collegiate career. She had the second-best average among the tournament field on par-three holes this weekend with an average score of 2.87.
Sophomore Emilee Hoffman tied for 13th place overall and has finished within the top-25 individually in each of Texas' five tournaments this fall. Hoffman finished with a one-over-par 214 (73-71-70).
Sophomore Maren Cipolla, competing as an individual, also tied for 13th place, recording her best collegiate finish with a one-over-par 214 (73-73-69). Cipolla's two-under-par 69 on Sunday tied her best collegiate round. It was the second consecutive top-25 individual finish for Cipolla, who finished tied for 24th at the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
Sophomore Greta Isabella Voelker tied for 22nd with a four-over-par 217 (72-74-71), while freshman Agathe Laisne tied for 33rd with a six-over-par 219 (73-70-76).
Texas returns to action Feb. 11-13 at the Northrop Grumman Intercollegiate, contested at the Palos Verdes Country Club in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.
POST-TOURNAMENT QUOTES
Head Coach Ryan Murphy
"We had a nice tournament here in Cabo. It was one where we had some very solid play but just didn't get the 66s or 67s on the board that we needed. Overall, I'm pleased with my team's effort this week and through this semester. We've played a lot of golf and had a few moments of brilliance. It will be about consistency in the spring if we are to realize our potential."
On senior Sophia Schubert's fourth-place finish with a four-under-par 209 …
"Sophia has maintained good form and had another strong finish. She has played at a really high level for several consecutive months now and a break is very much in order for her. I'm very proud of Sophia's semester – and really her last nine months – and expect her to continue her great play in the spring."
On freshman Kaitlyn Papp's top-10 finish with a one-under-par 212 …
"Kaitlyn played some good golf this week. Each round was very solid and, had she dropped a few more putts each day, she definitely would have contended for the individual title. That day will come in the spring for Pappy."
On sophomore Emilee Hoffman's 13th-place finish with a one-over-par 214 …
"Emilee had a nice week, as well. She played well but caught some early bad breaks. Otherwise, it would have been even better. Em has had a nice fall, but she's just getting warmed up. We'll see her best in the spring."
On the performances of Greta Isabella Voelker and Agathe Laisne …
"We also had some nice rounds from Greta and Agathe. Their effort was evident each day of the event as they battled for a few of those scores around par. Greta has a resiliency that keeps her in the game at times. It's nice to see."
On sophomore Maren Cipolla's career-best 13th-place finish competing as an individual …
"I'm particularly proud of Maren. Her 69 today was the second time this semester she has had a round like that. A T-13 finish playing as an individual is a strong finish and clearly shows what she is capable of. She's been working and is moving in a good direction right now. It's nice to see and I'm very proud of her."
