Baseball pounds out 11 hits in 5-3 win over Kansas

The Longhorns defeated the Jayhawks in their first Big 12 Conference road game of the season.
LAWRENCE, Kansas—Backed by a seven-inning effort from Nolan Kingham, Texas Baseball (19-10, 4-3 Big 12) poured on 11 hits in a 5-3 win over Kansas (10-15, 1-3) on Friday night at Hoglund Ballpark.
The Longhorns got on the board in the first when, with two outs, Kacy Clemens hit his team-leading fifth long ball of the season to give Texas a 1-0 lead.
Kansas immediately responded in the bottom half, however, as the Jayhawks benefitted from an unearned run to pull even at 1-1.
In the third, Bret Boswell reached on a dropped fly and one batter later, catcher Michael McCann singled to left to plate Boswell and put the Longhorns back on top 2-1.
As was the case in the first, the Jayhawks answered in the bottom half. After a leadoff hit by pitch, Kansas' leading hitter Matt McLaughlin singled up the middle to knot it up at 2-2 off Kingham.
In the fourth, Texas took the lead for good. Austin Todd singled to open the inning and moved to second on a groundout and third on a wild pitch. David Hamilton followed with a four-pitch walk before Travis Jones took the 2-0 offering to left-center for his second double of the ballgame to clear the bases and put the Longhorns up 4-2.
McLaughlin added a solo homer in the fifth off Kingham, but that would be all the scoring for the Jayhawks in the ballgame.
With the Texas lead cut back to one, freshman Ryan Reynolds hit his fourth homer of the season to regain the two-run advantage at 5-3.
Kingham (4-2) would finish his outing with seven innings of work. The reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) to go along with three walks and five strikeouts on 110 pitches.
Sophomore reliever Beau Ridgeway (5) entered in the eighth inning and shut down the Jayhawks in two innings of work to earn his fifth save of the season.
Five Longhorns finished with two hits in the ballgame—Jones, McCann, Todd, Reynolds and Hamilton, with Jones and Hamilton each notching a pair of doubles.
The Longhorns and Jayhawks return to action tomorrow for a 2 p.m. game at Hoglund Ballpark.
