Freshman forward Tecora Turner nets a brace to power Longhorns in the shutout victory
AUSTIN, Texas – A brace (two goals) for freshman forward Tecora Turner and single goals from sophomore midfielders Katie Glenn and Nakia Graham, on Friday in San Antonio, Texas, helped continue Texas soccer's (3-0) unbeaten spring roll as the Longhorns blanked UTSA, 4-0.
Combining its three regulation matches so far during the 2017 spring campaign, UT has outscored its opponents, 12-0.
It took just 12 minutes for the Burnt Orange & White to grab a lead on the Roadrunners. Freshman forward Cyera Hintzen recovered possession of a loose ball in UT's offensive half, turned and slotted a ball ahead into space for Turner. With UTSA's keeper racing out in an attempt to cut down the angle, Turner made a deft touch to move around the net minder and finished with her left foot into the open goal to make it 1-0.
After a solid chance from the Roadrunners went awry, Texas doubled its lead approximately nine minutes later. Off a pick-up by Turner, the Memphis, Tenn., native fed the ball to Graham on the right side. The sophomore midfielder worked past her defender and crossed a ball to the left post where Glenn ran onto it, depositing it into the twine for her fifth goal over the Longhorns' last two spring matches.
UTSA nearly got on the board during the 23rd minute as a cross in from the left wing created a dangerous chance. Freshman defender Atu Mshana responded quickly, however, coming through with a vital clearance to prevent a chance on an open Texas goal.
Eight minutes out of the halftime break, Graham got her own tally in the scoring column while boosting the advantage to 3-0. Off an Emma Jett throw-in, Hintzen controlled the ball and crossed towards the penalty spot. Graham was waiting to drive it home low to the corner with the outside of her right foot.
In the 56th minute, Texas made it 4-0 as junior midfielder/forward Amber Stearns attempted a shot that was stopped briefly by UTSA's keeper. A rebound ricocheted straight to Turner and the forward then evaded the net minder and a pair of defenders to slot a drive home through traffic.
The lead nearly expanded to five or even six scores for the Horns just a few ticks of the clock later as shots by Jett and Turner, who was on a hat trick, both hit the post before being cleared away.
