AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Men's Golf alum Jordan Spieth (2012) won his third major championship and 11th PGA event of his career after capturing The Open Championship on Sunday at Royal Birkdale.
Spieth won the Masters championship and the U.S. Open Championship in 2015 and has an opportunity now to become the youngest player in history to win a Grand Slam at next month's PGA Championship.
Only five players in history--Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Gary Player, and Gene Sarazen have won Grand Slams.
Spieth is the youngest player to win The Open at 23, finishing at 12-under 268 and becomes the first player to post all four rounds in the 60s at Royal Birkdale, which was hosting its 10th Open.
Justin Leonard is the only other Longhorn to win The Open, doing so at Royal Troon in 1997.
Head Coach John Fields
"Pearl and I could not be more thrilled for Jordan and his family. We started the week with four Longhorns in the field—Spieth, Frittelli, Stone and Vegas. We have ended the week with the Champion Golfer of the Year. Royal Birkdale has produced another great champion, this time a Longhorn. Jordan will share this with the entire state of Texas, our UT administration, UT alumni, UT student body, staff, and professors that are at the University of Texas at Austin."
