AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Cross Country hosts the Texas Invitational on Thursday evening as the Longhorns are set to run on the same course they will host the Big 12 Championship on later this season.
Action begins at 6:30 p.m. from Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. The women will race a 4K with the men set to follow with a 6K.
"We're at that point in the season where all the points matter. Now it's go time and Thursday is a great opportunity for us. Thursday will be an opportunity for us to really showcase everybody," said Coach Brad Herbster.
Texas will see a pair of Big 12 rivals in Texas Tech and TCU with the Red Raiders and Horned Frogs looking to test out the course prior to the conference championship. Regional teams UTSA, Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M and NCAA Division II Ouachita Baptist also will run on Thursday night.
Herbster said he is looking forward to running some of his veterans in order to give them race experience on the Big 12 course. This will be an important meet for the Longhorns as they will be looking to learn the course and how to execute on it.
"Having that ability to preview the home course, but also the Big 12 course is a huge advantage. It should be a good opportunity for these seasoned vets but also for the newcomers who haven't seen the course or been in a college race," Herbster said. "You can practice on a course all you want, but once you race on it, it's totally different. This is a great opportunity to get out there and race."
Admission to the Texas Invitational is free for fans. Parking for the event will be available in the parking lot by the tennis courts at Old Settlers Park. To get to Old Settlers Park take Exit 254 off of I-35 and head east on Old Settlers Blvd. Turn right onto Harrell Parkway at follow to the tennis courts on the rght.
