NORMAN, Okla. – Junior Maddie Luitwieler and freshman Kaitlyn Papp each carded even-par 71s on Saturday to lead the Texas women's golf team in the opening round of the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club. The Longhorns currently sit in a tie for eighth place as a team with a season-best round of 290 after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event.
Luitwieler's 71 tied her best collegiate round, which she has accomplished on three previous occasions, and she is tied for 18th place after the first round. She connected on her first career hole-in-one with an eagle on the par-three 17th hole. Luitwieler had two birdies on Saturday and was one of only three players in the round to chart an eagle. Luitwieler finished the back nine – which the Longhorns played first – two under par.
Papp, a freshman playing in her second collegiate tournament, recorded a round of par or better for the second time in her four collegiate rounds with an even-par 71. Papp, who posted a top-20 individual finish at the Dick McGuire Invitational, sits in a tie for 18th after the first round of the Schooner Fall Classic.
Sophomores Greta Isabella Voelker and Maren Cipolla each posted three-over-par totals of 74. Sophomore Emilee Hoffman carded a four-over-par 75. Hoffman had the most pars of any participant in the tournament field on Saturday with 15.
Texas totaled 61 pars on the day, which led all teams, and the Longhorns also bested the field with an average score of 3.0 on par-three holes.
The second round of the Schooner Fall Classic begins at 9:10 a.m. CT on Sunday. Live results will be available at: https://www.birdiefire.com/tournament/41031/.
TEXAS QUOTES
Junior Maddie Luitwieler
On her first-ever hole in one …
"The hole was playing 150 yards and the wind was blowing straight left. There was a ridge in the middle of the green and I play a draw so I planned to take a 7-iron and shape it into there. I landed it right on the ridge. I didn't see it go in but there was a crowd behind the green and a guy held his hands up like a football field goal sign and everybody started going crazy. I could see Emilee [Hoffman] in the other fairway and she freaked out too. The chain reaction of our spectators and teammates was really awesome."
On her round of 71 today and looking forward to Sunday …
"I feel really comfortable here. I lived in Oklahoma for 10 years so I have experience in the wind and I love the greens. They are bent grass and rolling really fast right now and I feel really confident about my putting. I just need to go out there tomorrow and be patient, let the putts drops, really focus on my targets. That's the best I can do."
