Record-Setting Day for Women's Golf at Schooner Fall Classic
09.25.2017 | Women's Golf
Longhorns finish fourth and set numerous school records.
NORMAN, Okla. – Sophomore Emilee Hoffman and freshman Kaitlyn Papp each fired school-record seven-under-par 64s on Monday to lead the Texas women's golf team to a fourth-place finish on a record-setting day for the Longhorns at the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club.
Texas carded the best round in school history on Monday with a 10-under-par 274 and completed the tournament with the second-best 54-hole total in program history at 851 (-1). Seven of the top eight 18-hole rounds in program history and each of the top-six 54-hole tournaments in school annals have come under the direction of head coach Ryan Murphy.
Hoffman and Papp set the school record for the best 18-hole round at 64 on the par-71 course. Last season, Hoffman and Greta Isabella Voelker each recorded then-school-record scores of 65 on par-72 courses. Madison Pressel in 2009 also recorded a 65 on a par-71 course. The duo of Hoffman and Papp also tied the school record for a seven-under-par round, a record which had been set last year by Hoffman and Voelker.
Hoffman (75-70-64) and Papp (71-74-64) finished the tournament in a tie for sixth place. It was Hoffman's fifth top-10 collegiate finish and Papp's first in her young career. Hoffman's nine birdies on the day Monday bested the tournament field. Texas golfers totaled 23 birdies on the day as a team.
For Hoffman, it was a collegiate-best round and tied her lifetime best, as she also recorded a 64 at the 2016 Big I National Championship on a par-71 course. For Papp, her bogey-free round was her second in six rounds of her Texas career.
Voelker finished the event tied for 26th with a 1-over-par three-round total of 214 (74-70-70). Junior Maddie Luitwieler totaled a nine-over-par 222 (71-74-77) and sophomore Maren Cipolla recorded a 10-over-par 223 (74-73-76).
No. 3 Alabama claimed the tournament's team title with a 21-under-par 831 (281-281-269). Clemson was second with a four-under-par 848 (285-286-277), while No. 23 Florida was third with a three-under-par 849 (284-286-279). Alabama's Kristen Gillman was the individual medalist with a 13-under-par 200 (68-68-64).
The event, co-hosted by the University of Oklahoma and the Toby Keith Foundation, provided several opportunities outside of golf for the Longhorns to give back to the community, meeting and playing with children afflicted with cancer and their families. The participating teams also got to meet country music artist Toby Keith and visit his home.
Texas returns to action October 1-3 when it travels to Eden Prairie, Minn., to participate in the prestigious Annika Intercollegiate at Olympic Hills Golf Club.
TEXAS QUOTES
Sophomore Emilee Hoffman
On Monday's round of 64 (-7) …
"I played great today and had a lot fun. It was just a solid round. The first few days I struggled with my ball striking and my putter a little bit but I worked it out. I hit 16 greens and closer to the pin so I had a lot of chances at birdie today and a lot of putts fall. It's a great feeling to put together a low round like this. When everything clicks it's a nice feeling to see that hard work in certain areas is paying off."
On the Schooner Fall Classic, which was co-hosted by the Toby Keith Foundation …
"This tournament has been really well run - hats off to the organizers and volunteers. It was awesome to meet Toby Keith, hang out at his house and to learn more about his foundation. We had a chance to tour the OK Kids Korral and meet and play with families and some of the kids there which was really eye opening and a great experience."
Freshman Kaitlyn Papp
On Monday's round of 64 (-7) and the week at the Schooner Fall Classic …
"I played really well. I didn't make any bogeys so I was really happy with that. I just played steady all day and if I faltered a little bit, I made it up and down. I also made a lot of putts today. My personal best is -8 but this felt pretty great too. I learned a lot about myself this week and it definitely helped me out in the final round."
