AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas (6-1, 4-0) defeated Baylor University (4-3, 2-2), 23-17 on Saturday afternoon at Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium. The Longhorn defense stopped Baylor at the 17-yard line as the Bears overthrew a pass to the end zone as time expired. Texas was helped by a big second quarter where they scored 20 points to take a 23-10 lead into the break.
KEY STATISTICS
- Cameron Dicker converted a pair of field goals on Texas' opening drives, but the Longhorns trailed 7-6 early in the second quarter. Shane Buechele would enter the game for Texas after Sam Ehlinger left with an injury on the second drive for the Longhorns.
- The Texas defense held Baylor to zero yards on their next two possessions, forcing a pair of three-and-outs for the Bears.
- Baylor took a 10-6 lead at the 5:03 mark in the second quarter with a 46-yard field goal after an 11 play, 51-yard scoring drive.
- Texas responded with a 44-yard strike from Buechele to Collin Johnson as Texas regained the lead (13-10) for good with 4:21 to play in the half.
- After forcing a third Baylor punt, the Longhorns capped off a 9-play, 70-yard drive with a three-yard scamper from Lil'Jordan Humphrey for a Texas touchdown. The Longhorns would lead 20-10 with 1:12 remaining in the second quarter.
- Texas turned a Caden Sterns pick into three points after Dicker hit a career-long 47-yard field goal as time expired in the half to put the Longhorns up by 13.
- The teams traded punts on both of their opening possessions in the second half, but a Baylor interception at their own 44-yard line set up a 5-play touchdown drive for the Bears.
- A 34-yard field goal try by Texas missed wide-left late in the third quarter as the Longhorns held onto a six-point lead (23-17) with a quarter left to play.
- The Longhorns weren't able to turn a 14-play drive that took 6:44 off the clock into any points as the Bears took over from their own three-yard line with 1:43 to play.
- Baylor drove the ball 80 yards to the Longhorn 17-yard line, but a pass to the end zone was overthrown as time expired for a 23-17 Texas win.

Texas enters their bye week on a six-game winning streak and off to their best start since the 2009 season. The Longhorns will travel to Stillwater, Okla. to face Oklahoma State on Oct. 27 when they return to action. Kickoff time and TV information have yet to be announced.
