Softball returns to fall action in a Saturday home doubleheader

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas softball team is slated to return to fall action on Sat., Oct. 27, by hosting a doubleheader at Red & Charline McCombs Field against Weatherford College and St. Edward's at noon and 2 p.m. CT.
Admission is free to all fans, while spectator parking will also be available for free in Lot 115 only. All other lots, including the East Campus Garage, will require a University of Texas parking permit. There will be no TV coverage of either contest.
The Longhorns are a perfect 2-0 during their 2018 fall campaign with wins over McLennan Community College (5-2, 9 inn.) and LSU (8-6, 9 inn.).
In their most recent outing in Houston against LSU, the Burnt Orange & White fought their way back from a 6-0 deficit with a six-run eighth and a two-run ninth to prevail, 8-6.
Texas' offense banged out 12 total hits in the contest, powered by a 3-for-4 effort with two doubles and two RBIs from sophomore second baseman Janae Jefferson. Junior catcher Taylor Ellsworth was 2-for-4 and contributed a clutch two-out, two-RBI double during the bottom of the ninth inning. Junior right fielder Tuesday DerMargosian was 2-for-4 with a RBI, redshirt junior center fielder Reagan Hathaway was 1-for-3 with a RBI and freshman pinch hitter Eli Espinosa was credited with a RBI on a key, eighth-inning, game-tying sacrifice fly.
In the circle for Texas, senior Brooke Bolinger earned the win in relief, striking out four over two innings of one-hit work. Sophomore Chloe Romero was also strong in relief during the middle frames, permitting just one hit over her two innings of effort.
UT is returning nine players from last season that earned time in at least 50 games (eight of those started at least 38 match-ups) and 13 total letter winners that combined to total 84% of the runs, 81% of the hits, 71% of the doubles, 80% of the HR's, 77% of the RBIs, 86% of the walks, 92% of the stolen bases and 42% of the team's pitching victories and strikeouts.
Included among the returnees are 2018 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American Janae Jefferson (sophomore second baseman - .392 avg., 30 runs, 74 hits, 11 doubles, 11 stolen bases, 24 RBIs), and NFCA All-Central Region standouts Kaitlyn Washington (junior outfielder - .359 avg., 56 hits, 21 runs, 13 doubles, three HR's, 20 RBIs), Brooke Bolinger (senior pitcher – 13-7 record, 2.20 ERA, 19 starts, eight complete games, four shutouts, 117.2 IP, 123 K's) and Taylor Ellsworth (junior catcher – 59 starts, 38 hits, 14 extra-base hits, five HR's, 29 walks, 22 RBIs).
