The Longhorns improved their overall 2018 fall season record to a perfect 4-0
AUSTIN, Texas – On Saturday afternoon at Red & Charline McCombs Field, the Texas softball team improved to a perfect 4-0 in fall action by sweeping a doubleheader from Weatherford College (8-0) and St. Edward's (9-0).
Four Longhorns pitchers combined on 14 scoreless frames of work while allowing just seven total hits. Sophomores Chloe Romero (4 IP, three hits) and Ariana Adams (3 IP, no hits) combined to blank Weatherford College, while senior Brooke Bolinger (4 IP, one hit) and freshman Shea O'Leary (3 IP, three hits) teamed up to shutout St. Edward's.
At the plate, Texas' offense banged out 18 total hits over the doubleheader, highlighted by a combined four-hit, two-RBI afternoon from All-American sophomore second baseman Janae Jefferson. Redshirt junior outfielder Reagan Hathaway knocked in four total runs, junior catcher Taylor Ellsworth managed three hits including a two-bagger, junior transfer infielder Macy Smith registered a pair of hits, a double and two RBIs, junior shortstop Kaitlyn Slack knocked in two runs and senior outfielder Bekah Alcozer doubled in a tally.
Game One vs. Weatherford College
With Romero keeping Weatherford College off the scoreboard over her four innings of work, the Texas offense jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Sophomore infielder MK Tedder got the rally started with a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sac bunt from freshman infielder Janna Roberts and came across to score on a Jefferson RBI single.
The Burnt Orange & White soon added to their advantage in the bottom of the fourth as Ellsworth's double was cashed in on Slack's RBI base knock up the middle.
Adams took over in the circle for Romero starting the fifth and quickly rolled through the line-up one-two-three with a strikeout.
That set the stage for another Jefferson RBI and a two-RBI single from Hathaway to expand the UT lead to 5-0 through five complete.
Playing out the bottom of the seventh despite holding the lead, Texas added three more to finalize an eight-run offensive output. Junior outfielder Tuesday DerMargosian scored on a Weatherford College miscue, Alcozer knocked in a run on a double down the left field line, and Slack made it a two-RBI contest on a sacrifice fly.
Game Two vs. St. Edward's
Jefferson picked up right where she left off from game one by singling and swiping a base to open the contest. She soon raced around on a St. Ed's miscue to grant the Longhorns a quick 1-0 lead in the opening frame.
With Bolinger in charge from the circle, Jefferson scored again on a Hathaway line drive during the bottom of the third. An Ellsworth RBI single and two more run-permitting Hilltoppers errors boosted the UT advantage to a commanding 5-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, DerMargosian singled, swiped a base and raced around to score on yet another of five St. Edward's errors in the contest. Hathaway soon followed with a sacrifice fly that plated senior Ki'Audra Hayter to make it 7-0.
O'Leary entered the circle for the Burnt Orange & White starting the top of the fifth and got in a little trouble as St. Edward's put two aboard on a hit and a UT miscue. The freshman quickly got out of the situation with a little help from her defense as Hayter handled a line drive and doubled off a Hilltopper runner to end any threat.
From there, O'Leary settled in from the circle, while Smith contributed a fifth-inning two-out RBI single and a seventh-inning RBI double to complete a 9-0 triumph.
