COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Texas Track & Field program opened the 2018-19 indoor season on Saturday at the Reveille Invitational. The season-opening meet, held at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M, was highlighted by Teahna Daniels' win in the 200m. The Longhorns and Aggies also competed against Houston and TCU.
"It's always exciting for our student-athletes to open their season in a competitive setting against some high-level competition," head coach Edrick Floréal said. "We had some bright spots during the meet and also several things that we can work on in our training to continue improving. We look forward to returning to training next week and getting prepared for the main indoor season starting in January."
MEET BREAKDOWN
• Daniels led a strong field in the women's 200m, posting a winning time of 23.66. Entering today, her time would be the best, not only in the Big 12 Conference, but in the country during this young season. Serenity Douglas also ran a strong race, finishing third with a time of 23.90. Freshman Kennedy Simon finished fifth with a strong mark of 24.08. Mariam Abdul-Rashid, Tamea McKelvy and Georgia Wahl also ran the 200m.
• On the men's side, Terry Brown, Jr. ran a strong race in the 200m to finish second. He was joined in the race by O'Brien Wasome and Kirema Macharia.
• Two combined event athletes made their season debuts in the 60m. On the women's side, Virginia Preiss ran, while Alex Loving made his collegiate debut on the men's side.
• In the women's high jump, Marleen Guerrero finished second with a personal-best jump of 1.62m/5-3.75. Her previous personal best was 1.60m/5-3.00.
• Megan Rourke and Samantha Shulhan both ran in the women's 1000m. Rourke finished in 3:00.35 while Shulhan ran a 3:04.63.
• The Longhorns had three teams entered - one in each section - of the women's 4x400m Relay. The Longhorns won the second heat with a time of 3:48.82, anchored by a final leg of 55.1 by Anne Sofie Kirkegaard. UT was in a neck-and-neck race in the third heat with Texas A&M, but a dropped baton would cost them a chance at the win and they'd finish second with a time of 3:37.80.
• UT entered a men's team in each of the two sections of the 4x400m Relay. In heat two, the Longhorns ran with the leaders into the final leg, but could not come up with the victory, finishing in a time of 3:17.73. In the first heat, the Longhorns finished with a time of 3:29.80.
UP NEXT
The Longhorns now break for the holidays and continue training as they prepare for the bulk of the indoor season. Next up for the Horns is the Ted Nelson Invite on Saturday, Jan. 12, back at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station. This season's Big 12 Championships are Feb. 22-23 in Lubbock, while NCAA Championships are March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
