As an amateur, Coughlan appeared on the 1997 Palmer Cup and 1997 Walker Cup, representing Great Britain and Ireland in both events.
He graduated from Clemson University in 1997, earning All-America honors in 1996 and 1997, and was named the NCAA Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year in 1997. He was inducted into the Clemson Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
