CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 4-under 284 on Monday to finish in second place after the final round of stroke play in the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa. By virtue of its top-eight showing, the No. 2 seed Longhorns advance to the NCAA Match Play quarterfinals and will face No. 7-seed UCLA on Tuesday beginning at 8:50 a.m. Central (6:50 a.m. Pacific).
UT has now advanced to NCAA Match Play (final eight teams) in nine of the last 14 opportunities (2012-13-15-16-18-19-22-25-26), dating back to the 2012 NCAA Championship. Texas is the ONLY Division I men's program to reach Match Play in at least nine of the last 14 opportunities. The 2020 tourney was canceled due to COVID-19. In addition, Texas, Oklahoma State and Stanford are the only three schools to have their men's AND women's programs advance to the Match Play portion of the NCAA Championship this year.
During Monday's final round of stroke play, Texas counted scores from graduate Matt Comegys (3-under 69), senior Christiaan Maas (2-under 70), senior Tommy Morrison (1-under 71) and senior Luke Potter (2-over 74). Morrison was UT's top individual finisher in the stroke-play portion of the NCAA Championship, as he tied for 10th place with a four-round score of 7-under 281 (69-71-70-71). Morrison earned a spot on the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team by virtue of his top-15 individual finish.
"We played really well and shot under-par again," Texas head coach John Fields said. "Obviously we didn't finish quite like we wanted but we came really close today. We need to turn our attention to match play now because it's go-time in the morning. To advance to Match Play for the ninth time, that's a great thing for our program. I'm super proud of our guys, proud of our program and proud of The University of Texas."
The Longhorns recorded a 72-hole total of 23-under 1129 (287-277-281-284). No. 1 Auburn earned the top seed in Match Play at 26-under 1126 (284-272-286-284), while No. 11 Vanderbilt garnered the third seed at 12-under 1140 (287-277-291-285).
