Junior hurler Brooke Bolinger tied her career-high with 10 strikeouts in the tough defeat
CHARLESTON, S.C. – On Sunday morning in Charleston Invitational action at the CofC Softball Stadium, junior pitcher Brooke Bolinger tied her career high with 10 strikeouts but Texas softball (12-13) fell victim to a seventh-inning Georgetown outburst in dropping a 1-0 decision.
Bolinger (4-4) suffered a tough defeat in a complete game effort, allowing one earned run on four hits with no walks and the career-high-tying 10 K's.
At the plate for the Longhorns, senior designated player Paige von Sprecken and sophomore left fielder Tuesday DerMargosian led the offense by each going 2-for-3, while freshman second baseman Janae Jefferson (1-for-3) and senior right fielder Randel Leahy (1-for-2) managed UT's other hits.
The story of the early game was missed chances for both teams as the Longhorns left the bases loaded in the opening inning and six base runners total over the first three innings. Georgetown stranded runners in each of the first two frames, including one following a leadoff double to start the second.
Bolinger was in control from the circle for the Burnt Orange & White as the Yucaipa, Calif., native struck out eight Hoya hitters over her first four innings of work.
Jefferson tried to get UT's offense going in the bottom of the fifth by starting off the inning with a walk. With the Humble, Texas, product in scoring position following a sacrifice bunt, the Longhorns missed another opportunity to grab the lead on a fly ball to left and a strikeout.
Both Bolinger and Georgetown's Anna Brooks Pacha continued their pitcher's duel into the seventh as the Hoyas first two batters of the frame were retired on a fly ball and the UT hurler's career-high-tying 10th strikeout. That's when GU's offense managed to string together enough offense to grab a 1-0 lead. First baseman Noelle Holiday got things started on a two-out single to left center. That set the stage for shortstop Savannah Jones who launched a shot to deep left. UT sophomore Kaitlyn Washington raced back to the fencing and almost made a great catch only to have the ball pop out of her glove as she collided with the wall. Holiday rolled around third and appeared to be an easy out at the plate only to have the relay throw get away from the Horns as Georgetown grabbed a 1-0 lead.
With Texas suddenly needing a late answer, DerMargosian got something going for the Longhorns by beating out a one-out single. She was soon joined on the bases by Leahy as the Norco, Calif., product blooped a two-out base knock onto the grass in left. Unfortunately, the rally came up short as a strikeout looking ended the contest.
