Southern California wins the March Mayhem event for the fifth time in six years.
RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – The No. 6 Texas women's golf team finished as the runner-up at the San Diego State University March Mayhem on Wednesday at The Farms Golf Club.
The Longhorns fell 5-0 to No. 7 Southern California in the championship round of match play. The Women of Troy claimed the event for the fifth time in its six-year history and for the third consecutive year.
It is the third top-two finish at an event this season for the Longhorns and their seventh top-five team finish in nine events this year.
Texas finished second overall in stroke play at March Mayhem with a nine-over-par 297. The Longhorns then advanced to the match-play championship with a 3.5-1.5 win against San Diego State and a 4.5-0.5 victory against Iowa State.
"It was a great week for us," Texas head coach Ryan Murphy said. "We played some nice golf and received some good match-play experience that will prepare us for May. All in all, I'm happy with everyone's efforts this week."
Freshman Kaitlyn Papp lost 2 and 1 to Southern Cal's Jennifer Chang, the nation's No. 23-ranked player. Sophomore Emilee Hoffman dropped a 2 and 1 decision to Allisen Corpuz, the No. 68 player in the nation.
