The Longhorns rallied to take the lead in the eighth but couldn't hold on in the loss.
Box Score
MORGANTOWN, W. Va.—Despite another late-inning comeback, No. 19 Texas Baseball (30-16, 12-5 Big 12) dropped game two at West Virginia, 8-6, on Saturday afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the first thanks to a pair of singles off Chase Shugart but, down by one, Texas took the lead DJ Petrinsky launched his fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot, to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
West Virginia answered in the bottom of the frame with the tying run and the score was 2-2 after two complete.
In the top of the third, Zach Zubia and David Hamilton hit back-to-back doubles and the Longhorns once again led by one, but a Kyle Gray home run tied things up in the bottom of the inning.
The sides exchanged zeroes in the fourth before Gray hit his second homer of the ballgame—this time with a runner aboard—to give West Virginia a 5-3 advantage.
Down two in the eighth, Texas opened things up with a Petrinsky hit by pitch and an Andy McGuire walk before the Mountaineer defense could not handle Tate Shaw's sacrifice bunt. With the bases loaded, Duke Ellis worked a walk to force in Petrinsky and pull the Longhorns to within one. With one out, Kody Clemens lined a single to center field to plate two to give Texas a 6-5 lead.
The lead would be short-lived for the Longhorns, however, as the Mountaineers responded with three in the bottom of the eighth off Kam Fields and McGuire (0-2).
Down to its final three outs, Texas threatened in the ninth with bases loaded but a pair of strikeouts and a fly out ended the ballgame.
Zubia and Ellis each finished with three hits in the ballgame while Petrinsky added two.
The two teams return to Monongalia County Ballpark on Sunday afternoon for the series rubber match beginning at noon CT.
