No. 19 Baseball falls in series finale, 8-3, to West Virginia

Texas got out in front early but a pair of big innings sunk the Longhorns on Sunday.

MORGANTOWN, W. Va.—No. 19 Texas Baseball fell, 8-3, on the road to West Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark. The series loss drops Texas to 30-17 on the year and 12-6 in Big 12 Conference action.
The Longhorns got on the board first in the ballgame, plating a pair of runs in the opening frame. Masen Hibbeler led off the game with a walk before a Duke Ellis single put two aboard. Zach Zubia then hit a one-out groundball that the shortstop couldn't handle and the Longhorns led, 1-0. David Hamilton followed with an RBI groundout of his own and Texas led, 2-0, after the first.
Blair Henley shut the Mountaineers down over the first three inning but in the fourth, they plated three to take a one-run lead.
WVU plated another run in the sixth to push its lead to 4-2 before Ellis hit an RBI single in the seventh to pull Texas back within one.
In the eighth, however, the Mountaineers expanded their lead. After a WVU single off Josh Sawyer to open the frame, Matteo Bocchi came on in relief. The West Virginia offense scored four in the inning before Bryce Elder entered to close out the frame.
Texas was unable to muster a rally in the ninth and the Longhorns dropped the rubber match by an 8-3 final.
Texas returns to action on Tuesday night with a nonconference matchup against Texas State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
