AUSTIN, Texas—Despite another Kody Clemens home run and some stellar relief work from Parker Joe Robinson, Texas Baseball dropped a 5-4 ballgame to visiting Tennessee Tech in game one of the NCAA Austin Super Regional on Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns (40-21) got on the board first when, after a Duke Ellis double, Zach Zubia lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 in the first.
In the top of the third, the Golden Eagles (53-10) responded with a two-run inning off Nolan Kingham (8-4).
In the bottom half of the frame, however, Texas answered back. Jake McKenzie led off the inning with a double, his first of three hits on the day. After a wild pitch moved him to third, Ellis hit a long fly ball to center to plate McKenzie and tie it at 2-2. One batter later, Clemens ripped his 22nd home run of the year to put Texas on top, 3-2.
The Golden Eagles fifth put the ballgame out of reach for the Longhorns. After a leadoff walk and a single put two aboard, a two-run double made it 4-3. Then, with two away, another double pushed the Tennessee Tech lead to 5-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, McKenzie doubled once again and scored on a David Hamilton sac fly to make it a one-run game, but that would be all for Texas.
The teams return to the field tomorrow in a 2 p.m. game at UFCU Disch-Falk Field with the Longhorns looking to even the best-of-three series.
