AUSTIN, Texas—Behind another Kody Clemens home run and extraordinary performances from Chase Shugart and Blair Henley, Texas Baseball (41-21) forced a decisive game three in the NCAA Super Regional thanks to a 4-2 win over Tennessee Tech (53-11) on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The two teams will face off on Monday at noon for a chance to go to Omaha.
With Texas playing as the visiting team in game two, Clemens once again got the offense going. David Hamilton drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Duke Ellis sacrifice. Clemens then drove the 3-1 offering to right-center to plate Hamilton and put the Longhorns up, 1-0.
In the second, after a Jake McKenzie leadoff walk, Ryan Reynolds hit a two-out double to left to push the Texas lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the frame, Tennessee Tech got one back thanks to throwing error, but that would be all the Golden Eagles could muster against Shugart.
Up 2-1 in the third, Clemens went yard once gain. The second baseman launched the first pitch he saw over the right field wall to put Texas out in front 3-1.
Needing an insurance run, Ellis delivered an RBI single in the seventh to make it 4-1.
On the hill, Shugart (6-3) was strong for the Longhorns. The junior limited the Golden Eagles to just one unearned run on two hits and five walks to go along with five strikeouts over his six innings of work.
Behind Shugart, Blair Henley (1) entered and, after allowing a solo homer on his first pitch, the sophomore sat down the next nine he faced in order to clinch his first career save and even the series at one game apiece. The three hits are the fewest in a game for the Golden Eagles this season.
Texas had seven hits in the ballgame: two from Clemens, and one each from Ellis, Zach Zubia, Jake McKenzie, Tate Shaw, and Reynolds.
The two sides return to action on Monday at noon in the decisive game three on ESPN2. With a win, the Longhorns would return to the College World Series for an NCAA record 36th time.
