Matt Whelan, Kamron Fields and Cole Quintanilla combine for shutout win.
AUSTIN, Texas – Longhorn pitching dominated on Sunday and the No. 23 Texas Baseball team knocked off Purdue, 3-0, to win the four-game series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after Duke Ellis and Eric Kennedy both started the game with bunt singles. Austin Todd drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to left.
DJ Petrinsky provided the big blow, smacking a two-run double into the gap in right-center that made the score 3-0.
After being spotted three runs, the Texas pitching staff took care of the rest.
Starter Matt Whelan pitched five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out three batters. He pitched perfect frames in the first, third and fifth. The only time he had multiple runners on base was in the fourth inning.
Kamron Fields entered the game out of the bullpen in the sixth with a runner on first and nobody out. The sophomore right-hander got a double play and a ground out to get out of the inning unscathed.
Fields worked around an error in the seventh inning to keep the Boilermakers off the board. He then got out of a jam in the eighth with a strikeout to maintain the shutout.
Cole Quintanilla finished off the Boilermakers, with a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out the side around a single to pick up his first career save.
