No. 7 Women’s Tennis tops Baylor, 4-1, in Big 12 Championship quarterfinals

The Longhorns advance to face No. 26 Texas Tech in Saturday’s semifinals at 3 p.m. Central.
LAWRENCE, Kan. — The No. 7 University of Texas women's tennis team recorded a 4-1 victory against Baylor (9-21) in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinal round on Friday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The outright Big 12 regular-season champion, Texas (17-3) won its 11th-consecutive dual match and advanced to play No. 26 Texas Tech in the semifinals on Saturday, April 20 (3 p.m. Central). Texas Tech defeated Oklahoma, 4-3, in quarterfinal action on Friday.
The Longhorns grabbed an early 1-0 advantage by winning a hard-fought doubles point. Sophomore Fernanda Labraña and freshman Tijana Spasojevic registered an impressive 6-1 victory against Paula Baranano and Livia Kraus at second doubles. This marked the first time in spring dual-match action that Labraña and Spasojevic had played doubles together.
Dominika Sujova and Jessica Hinojosa answered with a 6-4 win against junior Petra Granic and sophomore Bojana Markovic at third doubles. The No. 59-ranked pair of junior twin sisters Anna Turati and Bianca Turati clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-3) victory against Kris Sorokolet and Angie Shakhraichuk at first doubles. In the deciding tiebreaker, the Turati twins won the first two points before Sorokolet and Shakhraichuk pulled within 2-1.
The Turati's claimed the next four points to build a 6-1 cushion and eventually closed out the match by a 7-3 count in the breaker. The Turati twins won their ninth consecutive doubles match and improved to 13-2 in dual-match doubles action this spring.
Markovic increased UT's advantage to 2-0 after a dominant 6-2, 6-3 win against Sorokolet at fourth singles. Shakhraichuk responded with a 7-5, 6-0 victory against Labraña to pull Baylor to within 2-1.
Senior Katie Poluta claimed a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Sujova at sixth singles to give the Longhorns a 3-1 lead. Trailing 5-4 in the opening set, Poluta won nine of the next 10 games to finish out her victory. She won her eighth-consecutive singles match and improved to 13-1 in dual-match singles play this spring.
No. 53 Granic clinched the dual-match win with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Baranano at third singles. Granic won her seventh-straight singles match and improved to 13-1 in dual-match singles action this spring.
Both No. 29 Bianca Turati and No. 37 Anna Turati held leads in their respective matches when the dual match was clinched. Bianca Turati won her first set 6-3 against Hinojosa and trailed 5-4 in the second set at first singles. Anna Turati won her first set 6-1 against No. 57 Kraus and led 4-3 in the second set at second singles.
