AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas Track & Field team will head to Fayetteville to compete in the second-annual National Relay Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas. With competition taking place from Thursday through Saturday, April 25-27, the event will serve as the Longhorns final tune-up for the Big 12 Conference Outdoor Championships May 10-12 in Norman, Okla.
The Longhorns will send a full men's and women's squad of nearly 50 total competitors to the meet that will feature 11 squads from around the country, including seven teams from the Big 12 Conference. At the Texas Relays earlier this year, the Longhorns men's and women's DRM's took home victories while the men's sprint medley relay won that title and the woman finished second. Those squads look to be among the favorites this weekend. Last year, the Longhorns earned two wins at the National Relay Championships, with current Longhorns Alex Rogers, Terry Brown Jr. and Sam Worley leading the men's Distance Medley Relay to victory and Rushelle Burton, Zola Golden and Teahna Daniels helping the Longhorn women win the 4x200m relay. Last year, Texas' women placed fourth in the team race with the men claiming a fifth-place finish.
Texas will be led this weekend on the men's side by sophomore Sam Worley, who is bringing in the fifth-best time in the NCAA this year in the 1500m and is expected to run in the distance and sprint medley relays, and Tripp Piperi, who owns the fourth-best mark in shot put and expected to compete in the same event along with discus. For the women's squad, Teahna Daniels, an expected member of the 4x100, 4x400 and sprint medley relay teams, still holds the sixth-fastest pace in the country this year in the 100m (11.20). On the distance side, senior Gabby Crank put down the 11th-best time in the 800m last weekend and is expected to compete in the SMR and DMR for UT.
The Longhorns are coming off a weekend that included the squad splitting up for four road trips across California and in Waco and coming home with 35 personal-best performances. Teahna Daniels (100m) and Steffin McCarter (long jump) picked up wins at the Mt. SAC Relays while Piperi became the second-best performer in the shot put in UT history with a toss of 68-11.25 at the Beach Invite. His throw is the seventh-best ever by a Longhorn, trailing only Olympic Gold Medalist Ryan Crouser. In Azusa, Calif., Alex Rogers broke Jeff Canada's (13:44.34, 1989) 30-year old school record in the 5000m with a 13:43.97 clocking at the Bryan Clay Invite.
Streaming on Friday at the National Relay Championships will start at 3:00 p.m. CT on SECn+ and similarly on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. CT for a two-hour time slot.
