AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas Track & Field program is in Sacramento, Calif. for the NCAA West Preliminaries held at Hornet Stadium May 23-25. The meet will serve as a qualifier for the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships, with the top-12 from each event moving on to the national championships in Austin June 5-8 at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Longhorn women's program will be led by the sprinters heading into the West Prelims with Teahna Daniels tied for the second-best time in the region in the 200m (22.71) as well as holding the second-best time in the 100m (11.10). Daniels swept the 100 and 200m at the Big 12 Championships two weeks ago, taking her third-straight crown in the 100m. Freshman Kynnedy Flannel is tied with Daniels in the 200m (22.71), while fellow rookie Julien Alfred holds the sixth-best time in the 200m (22.90) and the seventh-seed in the 100m (11.21).
Ashtin Zamzow, who has already qualified for the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon, also earned bids in the 100mH (13.44) and javelin (53.01m/173-11) and the Texas women qualified both relays with times of 43.84 and 3:31.16 in the 4x100 and 4x400, respectively.
Trevor Danielson, who became the fifth-best performer in program history with his Big 12 title two weeks ago in the javelin, holds the top seed (third) for the Longhorn men with a throw of (74.48m/244-4). Sam Worley and two-sport standout John Burt both carry in the fourth-best marks in their respective events with Worley competing in the 1500m (3:38.64) and Burt in the 110mH (13.70). Sophomore Tripp Piperi is coming off his second-straight Big 12 title in the shot put and holds the No. 4 seed in the event with a throw of 21.01m/68-11.25, a mark he set at the Beach Invitational that made him the second-best performer in program history.
