Track & Field preview: NCAA West Preliminaries (Day 2)

Three-Day NCAA Championship Regional Qualifying Meet continues in Sacramento, Calif. with 21 Longhorn entries on Friday.
AUSTIN, Texas — On the heels of a solid first day of action, Texas Track & Field heads into day two of the NCAA West Preliminaries in Sacramento, Calif. on Friday with 21 event entries competing in the regional field. Of that group, 14 will participate in quarterfinal action with a spot in the NCAA Championship at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin (June 5-8) on the line. Seven other Longhorn event entries will be lining up in first-round competition and looking to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. The NCAA West Preliminaries field features the top 48 qualifiers from the West Region of the country with the top 12 finishers advancing to the National Championship.
Senior sprinters Teahna Daniels and Mariam Abdul-Rashid will compete in two events on Friday, one for a spot in the NCAA Championship meet and the other to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday. Daniels won her heat in the 100m on Thursday to advance to Friday's quarterfinals and will also compete in round one of the 200m. On Thursday, Abdul-Rashid earned a spot in Friday's 400m hurdle quarterfinals and also is among the round one field in the 100m hurdles.
Two UT long jumpers (Steffin McCarter and Sophia Falco) punched their ticket to Austin on Thursday, and Ashtin Zamzow, the nation's top-ranked heptathlete, previously qualified for the National Championship field in that event. Sam Worley and Alex Cruz advanced to the quarterfinals in the 1500m on Thursday and will run for a spot in the National Championship on Saturday. Worley enters the final day of the West Prelims with the top first-round time (3:44.13) in the men's 1500m field.
Saturday will be the final day of competition for the NCAA West Preliminaries at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium. Next up for the Longhorns will be the NCAA Championship in Austin.
