UT's 4x100m relay posts second-best time in school history, and Teahna Daniels qualifies for 100m and 200m finals.
AUSTIN, Texas – A near record-breaking performance by the Longhorns' 4x100m relay team and a sensational day for senior sprinter Teahna Daniels highlighted women's competition on day two of the NCAA Track & Field Championships for The University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The 4x100m relay team of Kennedy Simon, Daniels, Zola Golden and Kynnedy Flannel sprinted to a time of 42.84 to finish second in their heat and automatically advance to Saturday's final. The 42.84 clocking matched the second-best time in school history and was the fastest 4x100m relay for the Longhorns in 14 years (since 2006). It was just .08 seconds shy of the 22-year old UT Record of 42.76 set in 1998.
For Daniels it was three NCAA Championship finals berths in about a three-hour span. She started her day as a member of the 4x100m relay squad, then just over an hour later put down a time of 11.05 in the 100m to advance to Saturday's final. That time was the third-fastest of the meet and equaled the eighth-best time in program history. About one hour after the 100m, Daniels was back on the track posting a 22.65 time in the 200m, to earn another bid to Saturday's finals. This time, her 22.65 effort matched the 10th-best time in school history. Daniels now has two of the Top 10 times in school history in both the 100m and 200m and is just the second Longhorn over the past 10 years to advance to the NCAA Championship final in both of those events. Longhorn great Morolake Akinosun is the only other one to accomplish that during that time and she last did it in 2016.
Several other Longhorns earned NCAA Championship bids, competed on Thursday but did not advance to Saturday's final. Freshman Kynnedy Flannel joined Daniels in the same 200m heat and made a strong push at the end and to finish with a time of 23.00 but did not advance. Senior Anna McDonald, the school record holder in the 3000m steeplechase, finished the event with a time 10:22.87 (19th) in the second heat while 400m runners junior Serenity Douglas went 53.25 (15th) and senior Zola Golden clocked in at 55.74 (24th) in the semifinal round. Long jumper Sophia Falco recorded a leap of 19-9 to finish 15th and the 4x400m relay team of Serenity Douglas, Kennedy Simon, Flannel and Mariam Abdul-Rashid closed out the evening with a time of 3:35.38 to finish 13th overall but did not advance to Saturday's final.
Texas is back in action with the men competing in NCAA Championship finals on Friday while senior Ashtin Zamzow, the nation's No. 1-ranked heptathlete and Longhorns' school record holder, will begin the first day of her quest for an NCAA title in the heptathlon. School-record holders Micaiah Harris (200m) and Jonathan Jones (400m) as well as top contenders Sam Worley (1500m) and Alex Rogers (3000m steeplechase) will compete in finals for the men on Friday. O'Brien Wasome also will compete in the triple jump on day three of the NCAA Championships in Austin.
