AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas Cross Country teams continue their seasons Friday evening in the Texas Invitational at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, Texas. The men's race begins at 6 p.m. CT and the women's competition follows 30 minutes later. The 5,000-meter course consists of two 2-kilometer loops followed by a 1-kilometer finishing circuit.
The UT men and women are fresh off of dominating performances two weeks ago in the Bear Twilight Invitational in Waco, Texas.
The Texas women finished 37 points ahead of their closest competitor in Waco, as 12 of the first 15 finishers were clad in burnt orange. Senior Destiny Collins, a native of Temecula, Calif., won the individual medal by finishing eight seconds ahead of the runner-up and 30 seconds ahead of all runners beyond third place. That performance helped her capture the fourth Big 12 Runner of the Week honor of her career.
"I'm excited that we get to run on our home course, and that we get to do it in front of our teammates and Texas fans," coach PattiSue Plumer said. "It's a 5K this weekend, so, from a coaching perspective, it'll also be nice to see how some of our kids handle a little bit longer distance than what we ran in Waco."
The Longhorn men had the top seven finishers, and eight of the first nine, in the Waco meet. UT scored a perfect 15 while finishing 35 points ahead of second-place. Junior Sam Worley, a native of New Braunfels, Texas, finished first in a group of three UT runners who crossed the finish line within a five-second window. The finish also earned Worley the Big 12 Runner of the Week award, the first time that a pair of Longhorns have swept the men's and women's weekly honor since Sept. 19, 2017, when Collins and Alex Rogers (2015-19) accomplished that task.
"We're tremendously excited to get to compete on our home course this weekend," coach Pete Watson said. "It's a great opportunity for the community to come out and support our guys, and we're looking forward to having a good crowd out in Round Rock on Friday. We had a really good race in Waco two weeks ago, so we're going to try and build on that this week and continue to do so as the season progresses."
Awaiting the release of Monday's (Sept. 16) standings by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, both Texas teams remain tied for second in the South Central Region. The men received 23 votes and the women 19 in the initial national rankings, which were released on Aug. 27.
Friday will mark the first of two visits by both Texas teams to Round Rock this season. On Friday, Sept. 27, selected members of both squads will compete in the Concordia Cross Country Classic.
