No. 9/9 Football loses to TCU, 33-31
AUSTIN, Texas – Despite battling back from a 9-point deficit early in the second half, No. 9/9 Texas (2-1, 1-1) came up short late falling to TCU (1-1, 1-1), 33-31, at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
KEY STATISTICS
- TCU scored on their second possession of the game with an 11-play, 67-yard drive to five the Horned Frogs a 7-0 lead.
- Texas countered on their next drive with senior Sam Ehlinger connecting on a 5-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Jake Smith to even the score, 7-7.
- After TCU scored a touchdown on their next possession, Texas struck quickly with a 4-play, 63-yard drive that took just 1:12 to execute, highlighted by an Ehlinger 45-yard touchdown pass to junior Brennan Eagles. The touchdown pass was the 80th of Ehlinger's career, which ranks second behind Colt McCoy (112) in UT history.
- TCU added pair of second quarter fields goals, giving the Horned Frogs a 20-14 lead heading into the half, then tacked on another field goal on the opening drive of the third quarter.
- Ehlinger connected for his third touchdown pass of the day, a 7-yard toss to sophomore Roschon Johnson, to cut the TCU lead to 23-21.
- Following a TCU field goal on their first possession of the fourth quarter, Texas took the lead on sophomore Malcolm Epps' 7-yard touchdown reception. Junior Keaontay Ingram ran in the two-point conversion to give Texas a 29-26 advantage.
- The Horned Frogs regained the lead with a touchdown to make it 33-29 with 4:01 remaining. TCU regained the ball on a fumble recovery at their own 1-yardline with 2:32 to play, pushing the ball to their own 15, before running the ball out of their end zone for a safety as time expired to close out the scoring at 33-31.
- Ehlinger completed touchdowns to at least four different receivers for the second time this season, having connected on touchdowns with seven receivers in the season opener against UTEP.
- The Longhorns had three players collect double-digit tackles, with junior Caden Stearns tying a career-high with 12, while sophomore Keondre Coburn and junior Joseph Ossai added 11 apiece.
- Ossai had a game-high 3.5 tackles for loss, including a sack, and Coburn set a career-high with two. In all, six Longhorns registered a tackle for loss.

Texas and Oklahoma will meet in Dallas on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Cotton Bowl for the AT&T Red River Showdown. The Longhorns and Sooners will kick off at 11 a.m. CT in a game televised on FOX.
