The Details
It didn't take long for the fireworks to start on Friday night as a Texas foul in the box granted Baylor a penalty kick opportunity just 3:56 into the contest. Unfortunately for the Bears, Maddie Algya stepped to the spot and pulled her PK outside the left post to keep things scoreless.
It was just 28 seconds later that Texas created a goal of their own as Brooks found pay dirt at 4:24. Madden started the play by driving a goal kick towards the center circle. Allen managed to leap and head the ball forward to Echols. The freshman took a quick touch and played a ball between three Baylor defenders right into the path of Brooks. The junior forward dribbled to the top of the box and chipped a shot, off the fingertips of BU goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt, just inside the right post to make it 1-0.
Down an early score, Baylor's offense began firing away as Sarah Hornyak (7:21) and Taylor Moon (7:48) each drove lengthy attempts straight to Madden.
The Longhorns came close to another at the 12:04 mark as Echols got a ball in some space in the right side of the 18. The Dallas, Texas, native fired a shot from 16 yards that Wandt dove to tip out to her right. A Bear defender was right there to take possession of the rebound and clear it out of any further danger.
With Baylor mostly settling for shots from distance, Texas created another chance at 31:31. A pass from the middle of the pitch from junior midfielder Julia Grosso located senior midfielder Haley Berg in space out wide left. The Celina, Texas, native drove in towards the left post and tried to beat Wandt short side. The BU goalkeeper managed to pop out her right leg, however, and deflect the nine-yard effort outside the woodwork.
The Bears nearly capitalized on a UT defensive mistake in the 35th minute. A slow Texas back pass was intercepted by Baylor near the top of the 18 and fed out on the left wing to Moon. In space, she drove a 10-yard shot directly into Madden's waiting arms for another of the San Diego, Calif., native's seven first-half stops.
Out of the halftime break, Echols caused more trouble at 49:24 as her nine-yard headed shot off a cross ventured up-and-over the bar.
During the 58th minute, Baylor's Mackenzie Anthony received a pass in some space behind the UT backline, but her 14-yard chip proved off target wide left.
Olivia Mack had another solid opportunity to grab Baylor the equalizer at 65:50, but her 12-yard shot from the right wing again traveled straight to Madden.
Perhaps Baylor's best opportunity in the second half came during the 71st minute. Off a cross from the right wing into the middle of the 18, Moon took control and drove a shot on target that Madden saved out to her right. A 14-yard follow up from Mack rolled wide left as the Longhorns maintained their one-goal advantage.
Echols created one final solid scoring chance for the Horns in the 74th minute as her 14-yard shot was tipped just up-and-over the crossbar by Wandt before landing on the top netting.
Over the last 11:11 of the match, the Bears offense managed five more shots, but none of them were on frame as UT's defense ran out the clock on the fourth Texas win of the season.
