No. 5 Men’s Golf claims Big 12 Match Play Championship

The Longhorns defeat Texas Tech (3-2-1) in title match on Wednesday afternoon.
HOCKLEY, Texas — The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team earned a 3-2-1 victory against No. 10 Texas Tech on Wednesday afternoon in the title match of the 2021 Big 12 Match Play Championship at The Clubs at Houston Oaks. This marked UT's first Big 12 Match Play title since the event began in 2018.
Texas began play on Wednesday morning with a 3-3-0 tie against No. 2 Oklahoma State. The tie gave the Longhorns a total of 10 points to secure the top spot in Pool B, which featured Texas, Oklahoma State, TCU, Baylor and Iowa State. Texas Tech advanced to the championship match with a total of 12 points to capture the top spot in Pool A, which included the Red Raiders, No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 13 Kansas, West Virginia and Kansas State.
In the championship match against Texas Tech, the Longhorns received individual wins from junior Mason Nome (3 & 2), senior Cole Hammer (3 & 2) and senior Pierceson Coody (2 & 1) while senior Parker Coody halved his match to secure the team title. The Longhorns posted a 4-0-1 mark during the three-day tournament. Pierceson Coody and Nome each registered perfect 5-0-0 individual match play records at the Big 12 Match Play Championship.
Texas returns to the course as a team on Jan. 24-26 at the Southwestern Invitational in Westlake Village, Calif.
Session 5 Recap vs. Oklahoma State
- Pierceson Coody claimed a 4 & 2 victory against Leo Oyo. Tied through 12 holes, Coody won four consecutive holes to close out his win.
- Mason Nome earned a 3 & 1 win over Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen. All square through 14 holes, Nome won three straight holes to finish off the victory.
- Parker Coody posted a 1-up victory against Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra. With the match all square through 17 holes, Coody earned a win on the final hole to claim the match victory.
- Junior Will Thomson dropped a 3 & 1 decision to Jonas Baumgartner. Junior Travis Vick fell 3 & 2 to Brian Stark, and Cole Hammer dropped a 1-up decision to Aman Gupta.
Championship Match Recap vs. Texas Tech
- Mason Nome posted a 3 & 2 victory over Andy Lopez. Nome dropped the first two holes to fall 2-down but fought back to even the match through eight holes. Tied through 12 holes, Nome won three consecutive holes to build a 3-up lead after 15 holes and halved hole 16 to close out his win.
- Cole Hammer registered a 3 & 2 win against Garrett Martin. Tied through the first seven holes, Hammer gained a 1-up lead after eight holes and held the advantage through 14 holes. Hammer then won holes 15 and 16 to finish off his victory.
- Pierceson Coody earned a 2 & 1 victory over Ludvig Aberg. Tied through the first six holes, Coody took a 1-up lead on hole seven. Leading 1-up through 16 holes, Coody won hole 17 to secure the win.
- Travis Vick dropped a 1-up decision to Calum Scott, while Will Thomson fell by a 5 & 4 score to Kyle Hogan.
