No. 9 Men’s Golf tied for fifth after first round at Southwestern Invitational

Senior Cole Hammer fired a four-under-par 68, including a hole-in-one on 13, and is tied for third in the individual standings.
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — The No. 9 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 1-over-par 289 on Monday to stand in a tie for fifth place after the opening round of the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club. Senior Cole Hammer posted a 4-under-par 68 to pace the Longhorns and is tied for third place on the individual leaderboard.
Hammer, who started his round 4-over through the first three holes, recorded a 6-under-par 30 on the back nine. His day was highlighted by a hole-in-one on the par-three, 202-yard 13th hole, which brought him to 1-under on the day. Hammer closed his round with birdies on 15, 17 and 18 to finish at 4-under.
The 12-team field at the Southwestern Invitational includes six squads that are ranked in the Top 25 of the latest Division I Bushnell Golfweek Coaches poll (Nov. 19).
No. 16 Georgia tallied a 9-under-par 279 and holds a four-stroke cushion over No. 2 Arizona State at 5-under-par 283. No. 5 and tourney host Pepperdine is third at 1-under-par 287. Georgia's Trent Phillips posted a 6-under-par 66 and owns a one-stroke advantage over Devon Bling of UCLA at 5-under-par 67 in the individual standings.
The Southwestern Invitational continues with 18 holes each on Tuesday, Jan. 25 and Wednesday, Jan. 26. Texas will be paired again with Arizona State, San Diego State and Washington for Tuesday's second round, and tee times will begin at 12:20 p.m. CT (10:20 a.m. PT) from hole 1. Golf Channel will provide live coverage on both Tuesday and Wednesday from 3-6:30 p.m. CT (1-3:30 p.m. PT).
The Lineup
- Senior Cole Hammer is tied for third in the individual standings at 4-under-par 68. Hammer opened his round at 4-over through his first three holes. After carding a 2-over 38 on the front nine, Hammer closed with a 6-under 30 on the back nine. His round included a hole-in-one on the 202-yard, par-three 13th hole to get to 1-under. Hammer added birdies on 15, 17 and 18 to finish at 4-under. He posted seven birdies and an eagle in his opening round.
- Junior Travis Vick recorded a 2-under-par 70 and is tied for seventh place. He posted a 2-under 34 on the front nine and was even-par on the back nine. Vick tallied four birdies on the day.
- Junior Mason Nome is tied for 38th place after firing a 3-over-par 75. He recorded a pair of birdies in his opening round.
- Freshman Alejandro Gonzalez carded a 4-over-par 76 and is tied for 44th place. After making the turn at 7-over 43, Gonzalez posted an eagle on the par-five 12th hole and a birdie on the par-five 15th to rally for a 3-under 33 on the back nine.
- Junior Will Thomson posted a 7-over-par 79 and is tied for 56th place.
