Track and Field’s Davis claims another collegiate record at Texas Relays
03.26.2021 | Track & Field / Cross Country
Tara Davis shattered a 36-year-old outdoor collegiate record in the long jump with a mark of 7.14m/23-5.25 on Friday.
AUSTIN, Texas – The 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays continued on Friday with record-breaking Track and Field action from the Longhorns at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Tara Davis' second collegiate long jump record in as many weeks was the highlight of Friday's competition for Texas.
Davis broke the collegiate, Texas Relays, Myers Stadium and school record in the women's long jump with a monstrous effort of 7.14m/23-5.25 (+1.0). Her effort broke Jackie Joyner-Kersee's 36-year-old collegiate record (6.99m/22-11.25 – 1985) and made Davis the first collegiate woman to jump 23-feet legally. Davis' record-breaking mark ranks No. 5 by an American and was the best since Tianna Bartoletta's 7.17-meter effort that helped her win Olympic gold in 2016.
In addition, Friday's performance gave Davis a sweep of the collegiate long jump records after breaking the indoor mark earlier this month. Davis set the indoor collegiate record (6.93m/22-9) en route to winning an NCAA title two weeks ago in Fayetteville, Ark.
The starring performance from the Texas jumpers wasn't done yet though, as Steffin McCarter launched himself to a Texas Relays title in Section A of the men's long jump. McCarter won with a mark of 8.17m/26-9.75.
In the heptathlon, freshman Kristine Blazevica placed second with a late surge thanks to a strong showing in the javelin. Blazevica finished the seven-event competition with a score of 5,813 – the seventh-best performance overall in school history. It ranks her No. 2 on Texas' top performers list all-time, behind only Ashtin Zamzow, who holds the top-six heptathlon marks by a Longhorn.
Marleen Guerrero won Section B of the women's high jump with a personal-best clearance of 1.79m/5-10.5. The senior's mark ties her for eighth place on Texas' top outdoor performers list and moves her to No. 3 in the NCAA this season among marks posted prior to this weekend.
Texas advanced qualifiers to Saturday finals in the men's 4x400-meter relay and men's 4x100-meter relays. In the 4x400-meter race, the Longhorns clocked a 3:06.54 as a team to lead the field in the first round. UT qualified fourth with a time of 40.36 in the 4x100-meter relay.
The final day of the Texas Relays begin at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday, with Longhorn Network providing coverage throughout the afternoon.
