LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 5 Texas Baseball rode eight solid innings from Ty Madden to a 5-2 victory over Kansas at Hoglund Ballpark on Thursday night. Madden picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing one unearned run on seven hits with five strikeouts in eight innings.
The Longhorns (18-8, 5-2) were led offensively by a 4-for-5 performance from Mitchell Daly. The freshman second baseman also added a double, scored two runs and drove in one. Eric Kennedy and Zach Zubia also had two hits apiece. The top five batters in the Longhorn lineup each drove in a run in the game.
The Longhorns scratched out a run in the first inning after Daly and Zubia hit back-to-back one-out singles. Silas Ardoin drove in the first run of the game with an RBI groundout.
Kansas tied the game up with an unearned run in the bottom of the second. Madden was able to limit the damage to just the one run.
Texas retook the lead, 2-1, in the top of the fifth and Daly was involved yet again. Kennedy singled and stole second base before Daly drove him in with an RBI double to left-center field.
Two more Longhorn runs came home in the eighth to extend the lead to 4-1. Daly started the inning with this third hit of the game, a single, and came around to score on an RBI triple by Zubia. With one out, Cam Williams lined a single to right field to bring Zubia home.
Kennedy drove in another insurance run in the top of the ninth, hitting an RBI single to right field to drive in Mike Antico, who had walked and stole second.
The Jayhawks got one run across in the ninth inning off of reliever Aaron Nixon.
