No. 5 Baseball shuts out Kansas to win series

The Longhorns pitched a combined shutout behind Tristan Stevens and Cole Quintanilla.
LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 5 Texas Baseball pitched its third shutout of the season behind seven great innings by Tristan Stevens to beat Kansas, 7-0, Friday night at Hoglund Ballpark. The Longhorns (19-8, 6-2) have won their third Big 12 Conference series and sixth-straight series overall.
Stevens pitched seven shutout innings for the longest outing of his career. He struck out four batters, with his final strikeout stranding two runners in scoring position to end the seventh. Cole Quintanilla pitched the final two scoreless innings with two strikeouts to complete the shutout.
Texas grabbed the lead with a run in the first inning after Mitchell Daly walked and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Zach Zubia drove in Daly with an RBI single up the middle.
Another Longhorn run came home in the second, with Douglas Hodo III starting the inning with a single to right field. Mike Antico sacrificed Hodo to second base and Trey Faltine drove in the run with a single to left field.
After the teams traded zeroes from the third through fifth, Ivan Melendez started the sixth inning with a double down the left field line. After a sacrifice bunt by Hodo, Antico drove in Melendez with a sacrifice fly to right field to make the score 3-0.
Texas tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth after loading the bases with one out to go up 5-0. A passed ball allowed Silas Ardoin to scamper homer before Antico hit an RBI groundout to score Melendez.
The Longhorns added even more cushion with two more runs in the ninth as Ardoin and Melendez both hit RBI doubles to make it 7-0.
Texas will go for the sweep of the Jayhawks on Saturday at 1 p.m.
