Pierceson Coody ascended to the No. 1 spot in the World Amateur Golf Ranking on Wednesday.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Men's Golf junior Pierceson Coody ascended to the No. 1 spot in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) for the first time in his career on Wednesday. He is the first Longhorn to hold the top spot as the world's best amateur golfer since Cole Hammer in 2019.
Coody, a Plano, Texas native, is a two-time All-American (2019 honorable mention; 2020 first team) for the Longhorns and champion of the 118th Western Amateur last August. During his collegiate career, he has recorded 43 rounds at par or better, and helped UT finish runner-up at the 2019 NCAA Championships.
Outside of collegiate golf, Coody advanced to the Round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst No. 2. He also posted a two-stroke victory in the 116th Trans-Mississippi Amateur at Maridoe Golf Club in his home state, joining a list of champions that includes Jack Nicklaus, Longhorn legend Ben Crenshaw and Bryson DeChambeau. Coody was a member of the 202 USA Arnold Palmer Cup Team, and has been selected to compete for the U.S. in the Walker and Arnold Palmer cups this year as well.
Coody's rise to No. 1 in the world comes on the heels of an incredible stretch of play during the Longhorns' 2021 campaign. Over his last four tournaments, Coody has posted four-straight top-three finishes. He opened the stretch by winning the George Hannon Collegiate at the UT Golf Club in Austin last month, and followed it up with runner-up finishes at the N.I.T. and Aggie Invitational, as well as tying for third at the Calusa Cup.
During his last month of play, Coody is averaging 69.08 strokes per round and has shot par-or-better in 11 of his 12 rounds. He is 32-under par overall during the four-tournament stretch. Coody has posted six top-10 finishes, and seven top-20's, in eight tournaments this season for Texas.
He and the Longhorns are scheduled to begin postseason play in less than two weeks at the Big 12 Championships in Hutchinson, Kansas. The Longhorns' pursuit of a Big 12 title begins Monday, April 26, at the Prairie Dunes Golf Club – the site of four title-winning efforts from Texas, including most recently in 2017.
