Neugebauer wins decathlon at Roadrunner Invitational

No. 7 Track and Field’s Leo Neugebauer climbed to No. 5 on the NCAA leaderboard with a strong performance.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 7 Texas Track and Field multi-events standout Leo Neugebauer scored 7,621 points to win the decathlon at the Roadrunner Invitational on Friday. Neugebauer's score, in addition to being a meet and facility record, is the fifth-best in the NCAA this season and moves him to No. 10 on Texas' top performers list.
The German international opened his second day of decathlon action by clocking a 15.29 en route to a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. His time helped him tack on 815 points to his impressive tally from Thursday's action. Neugebauer followed it up by winning the discus with a massive throw of 52.80m/173-3 in the discus – well beyond good enough for the win in the event, and a score of 929 points – his highest output in any of the 10 decathlon events.
In the final three events, Neugebauer won the pole vault, placed fourth in the javelin and finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run. He cleared the pole vault bar at 4.80m/15-9 to score 849 points and threw the javelin 45.54m/149-5 to post a 523-point effort in the final field competitions. Closing out the decathlon on the track, Neugebauer ran the 1,500 meters in 5:08.92 to score 509 points.
Texas' vertical jumps competitors will take the stage on the final day of the Roadrunner Invitational tomorrow morning, with Longhorns slated to compete in the pole vault and high jump competitions.
