Ty Madden threw six innings and struck out 12 batters to earn his sixth win of the season.
STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 3 Texas Baseball beat No. 24 Oklahoma State, 4-3, in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at O'brate Stadium. Texas won its 15th consecutive game to improve to 32-8 overall and 11-2 in Big 12 play.
Ty Madden (6-1) was strong on the hill, earning the win after pitching six innings and striking out 12 batters while allowing six hits, one walk and two earned runs. Madden ended each inning with a strikeout, extending his streak to 11 consecutive innings. Seven of the eleven batters have gone down swinging.
The Longhorns got the scoring started early, plating a pair of runs in the first to take an early 2-0 lead. Mike Antico led off the game with a four-pitch walk and moved to third on Mitchell Daly's double down the left-field line. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, with Antico scoring for the first run of the game. Daly was driven in on a grounder to the shortstop.
In the Oklahoma State (23-11-1, 6-7) half of the inning, Madden pitched around a hit batter and a single that put runners on the corners with two outs, getting out of the inning unscathed and striking out three batters in the process.
Antico drew another four-pitch walk to open the third inning and was brought home on a shot to right field by Zach Zubia to put the Longhorns in front, 4-0.
A triple and back-to-back two-out doubles in the sixth brought two runs across for the Cowboys. A throwing error two batters later allowed another run to score, cutting the Texas lead to 4-3.
Cole Quintanilla pitched 1 1/3 shutout frames out of the bullpen, while Lucas Gordon struck out one and walked one in 2/3 innings of work. Aaron Nixon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.
The second game of the Texas-Oklahoma State doubleheader is slated to begin at O'brate Stadium this evening at 6:00 p.m.
