No. 4 Track and Field’s Tara Davis ran the fastest all-conditions time ever by a Longhorn in the 100-meter hurdles last Saturday.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 4 Texas Track and Field's Tara Davis was named the Big 12 Women's Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Wednesday. Davis was also recognized on March 31 after setting a collegiate record in the long jump at the Texas Relays.
A native of Agoura Hills, Calif., Davis' second weekly conference honor this year is a result of her running the fastest all-conditions time by a Longhorn all-time, and climbing to No. 2 on this season's NCAA leaderboard, in the 100-meter hurdles at the LSU Alumni Gold in Baton Rouge, La. She ran the race in 12.61, placing second, but was aided by a +2.6 wind reading to prevent her from officially claiming the UT school record. In addition to being the fastest all-conditions time on Texas record and second-best in the NCAA this year, Davis' effort in the hurdles ranks seventh in the world among all times, both wind-aided and wind-legal, this year.
She is the first Longhorn to earn the Big 12's weekly honor multiple times during the same outdoor season since Morolake Akinosun also did so twice in 2015. Davis' recognition on Wednesday marks the 31st time a Texas woman has been named the Big 12 Outdoor Athlete of the Week, the most of any program in the conference.
It is the fourth Big 12 Athlete of the Week award for the UT women this season, and fifth overall among the program including the men. Previously, O'Brien Wasome and Elena Bruckner swept the honors on March 10 following the Longhorn Invitational, Davis then earned the honor on March 31 after her record-breaking long jump at the Texas Relays, and most recently, until Wednesday, Kynnedy Flannel earned the nod on April 7 after a dual meet against then-No. 6 Texas A&M in Austin.
