AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Baseball lost to No. 11 Texas Tech, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in the resumption of Saturday's rain-suspended game.
Mike Antico and Douglas Hodo III each collected two hits for Texas in the loss.
Texas (34-11, 12-5) had chances earlier in the game to get on the board, placing runners on second and third with one out in the fifth but the Longhorns were unable to bring a run across.
After the sides traded zeroes through five innings, the Texas Tech (30-10, 10-7) used four hits, one walk and two hit batters to put five runs on the board in the sixth.
Ivan Melendez got one back for the Longhorns with a leadoff bomb onto the street beyond left field, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
Trailing 5-1 heading into the eighth, Antico hit a one-out single through the right side and Mitchell Daly doubled off of the wall in left. Zach Zubia, Melendez and DJ Petrinsky followed with three-straight walks to plate two runs and cut the Red Raider lead to 5-3.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth, light rain that had been falling for a couple of innings turned into heavy rain and play was suspended on Saturday and resumed this afternoon at 1 p.m., with the Red Raiders getting the final out to close out the inning.
Tanner Witt entered in the sixth, striking out a pair of batters in two shutout innings. Cole Quintanilla threw a scoreless ninth.
The Longhorns dropped their first series of the season with the loss.
Texas will look to salvage the series this afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field at 2:30 p.m.
