The Men’s Golf standout has been the world’s No. 1 amateur and one of the top collegiate golfers this year.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas men's golf junior Pierceson Coody was one of 10 student-athletes named a finalist on the final watch list for the 2021 Fred Haskins Award on Friday. Coody will be looking to join three time winner Ben Crenshaw (1971-73), Bob Estes (1987), Justin Leonard (1994), Brad Elder (1997) and Beau Hossler (2016) as Longhorns to win the prestigious award.
This season, Coody has been instrumental in Texas' success as a team as well as starring as an individual both collegiately and as an amateur elsewhere. He is ranked among the top five in all four major college and amateur rankings, including No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) and No. 3 in the Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking (SPWAR). Last week, he was named a finalist for the Ben Hogan Award, which is presented annually to the top men's college golfer taking into account all collegiate, amateur and professional experiences over the past 12 months.
The Plano, Texas native has posted top-10 finishes in eight of 10 starts so far this season at the collegiate level, including in each of his last six appearances for the Longhorns. That streak dates back to his first collegiate victory at the George Hannon Collegiate, held at the UT Golf Club in mid-March. He is averaging 70.93 strokes-per-round in collegiate competition this season and has recorded 19-of-29 rounds at par or better, including nine rounds in the 60's.
Coody has also excelled outside of collegiate competition over the past year, a run of form that began when he was crowned champion of the 118th Western Amateur last summer. Since then, he has competed for Team USA at the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup and the 2021 Walker Cup. Coody scored two points for the Americans in fourball competition with Texas women's golf star Kaitlyn Papp at the Palmer Cup. He then scored two points in singles action to help the Americans retain the Walker Cup at Seminole Golf Club. Coody has also been selected to compete for Team USA in the 2021 Arnold Palmer Cup later this summer, and recently made his PGA Tour debut at the AT&T Byron Nelson, held at TPC Craig Ranch, earlier this month.
Celebrating its 50th year, the Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel has been given to players who have captured 31 major championships and won more than 400 professional tournaments around the world. Past recipients include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, the aforementioned Crenshaw and Justin Thomas. The Haskins Award is the oldest individual college golf award and the only award to be voted on by players, coaches, golf SID's, and select golf media.
