No. 5/5 Track and Field’s day halted by weather

O’Brien Wasome advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on a weather-shortened Friday at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 5/5 Texas Track and Field program had its day cut short, as inclement weather halted the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Friday at E.B. Cushing Stadium. Lightning and rain moved into the area in the early evening, but not before senior jumper O'Brien Wasome became the eighth Longhorn to earn a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Championships this week.
Wasome punched his ticket to Eugene in the triple jump with a mark of 16.41m/53-10.25 (+0.9). The 2018 NCAA Indoor triple jump champion, Wasome will now get another crack at the Outdoor crown after his effort on Friday. His mark also helped him complete the long jump and triple jump qualification double for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Jamaican international qualified for the long jump field in Oregon on Wednesday.
Texas nearly placed two into the NCAA triple jump field, as Stacy Brown Jr. finished in the dreaded 13th position – less than one inch off of a qualifying spot. His finish came following a personal-best jump of 15.95m/52-4, more than a foot further than his previous best mark at the collegiate level. Brown's jump moved him into 10th place on Texas' top performers list in the event, and he joined Wasome as the only Longhorns to crack that top-10 list since 2011.
The NCAA West Preliminary Round is slated to resume on Saturday, with an updated schedule to be released when available.
