Another strong day at Olympic Trials for Track & Field
06.24.2021 | Track & Field / Cross Country
Six current and former Longhorns advanced across three events on day seven of the U.S. Olympic Trials, while one other moved on to the semifinals at the Jamaican Olympic Trials.
EUGENE, Ore. – Texas Track & Field had several strong performances on day seven of the U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. on Thursday. All-American Kynnedy Flannel broke her own Texas outdoor school record in the 200m and former Longhorns Teahna Daniels and Morolake Akinosun joined her as the UT trio all advanced to the semifinals of that event. Meanwhile, NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Champion and College Indoor and Outdoor Record Holder Tara Davis swiftly advanced to the finals of the long jump, while current All-American Charles Brockman III and former All-American Aldrich Bailey, Jr., moved on to the semifinals in the 400m Hurdles. At the Jamaican Olympic Trials, Kevona Davis moved on to the semifinals of the 100m, as well.
The Longhorns posted three of the top nine times in qualifying in the women's 200m. Flannel clocked the event's third-best time of 22.31 to break the UT 200m record (22.47) she set in the prelims of the Big 12 Outdoor Championship earlier this year. The high scorer at that meet, Flannel won both the 100m and 200m and ran the anchor leg on the victorious 4x100m relay in helping Texas claim the Big 12 Title. Daniels, who earned a spot on Team USA with a third-place finish in the 100m on Saturday, ran a near personal-best of 22.54 (PR: 22.51) and the ninth-best time overall. She is seeking to become the first Longhorn to make Team USA in both the 100m and 200m. That would be a first for a Longhorn on Team USA, but Allison Peter (Virgin Islands/2012) and Julian Cuthbert (Jamaica/1992) previously competed in the Olympics in the 100m and 200m, with Cuthbert earning silver medals in both events in 1992. Akinosun also ran extremely well in qualifying, posting the seventh-best time overall (22.48) to drop her all-time best from 22.52. A gold medalist with Team USA's 4x100m relay in 2016, Akinosun advanced to the semifinal of the 100m on Saturday, but did not make the final.
Davis registered the fourth-best jump in qualifying (6.68m/21-11) on her second attempt of the competition and passed on her third and final try as she easily advanced to Saturday's final. Davis will look to become Texas' first American women's long jumper to earn an Olympic bid for Team USA on Saturday. Nicole Devonish competed in the long jump for Canada in 1996. In round one, Brockman III recorded the 11th-best time in the 400m Hurdles (49.98) to advance to Friday's semifinals. Bailey, Jr., a Longhorn 400m All-American now competing in the 400m Hurdles, was close behind in 12th (49.99) to join Brockman in the semis. Former Longhorn All-American Kendra Chambers clocked 2:02.73 to finish fourth in her heat of the 800m prelims, but did not advance to the semifinals.
In addition to the U.S. Olympic Trials, current Longhorn All-American freshman sprinter Kevona Davis clocked her collegiate-best 11.19 at the Jamaican Olympic Trials. That was the 10th-best time overall and advances her on to Friday's semifinals. That time moves her into eighth-place on the UT all-time outdoor performers list in the 100m, as well.
As day eight of the Trials take place on Friday, Texas will have competitors in action in the men's long jump qualifying (Steffin McCarter and Marquise Goodwin), men's 400m Hurdles semifinals (Brockman III and Bailey, Jr.), women's 400m hurdles first round (Ashley Spencer), men's 200m first round (Micaiah Harris) and women's 200m semifinals (Flannel, Akinosun and Daniels).
