No. 2 Baseball captures Austin Regional with 12-2 victory over Fairfield

The Longhorns advance to the NCAA Super Regional for the 11th time in program history.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 2 Baseball defeated Fairfield, 12-2, to win the NCAA Austin Regional Championship on Sunday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns went 3-0 in the regional and await the winner of the Gainesville Regional, which will be decided between South Florida and South Alabama on Monday.
Pete Hansen (9-1) struck out a career-high 13 batters in 6 2/3 innings of work, allowing six hits and one earned run while walking none.
Mike Antico went 2-for-2 with three walks, one RBI, three runs scored and four stolen bases. Douglas Hodo III had a triple and four RBI and Cam Williams drove in three runs.
Texas (45-15) got the scoring started with a run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Playing as the visiting team, Antico led off the game with a walk, then stole second and advanced to third on a deep fly ball to center. Ivan Melendez and Williams drew back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases for Hodo, who walked on four pitches to bring home the first run of the game.
The Longhorns plated four more runs in the second to make it a 5-0 ballgame. With one out, Eric Kennedy reached on a bunt single and advanced all the way to third on a throwing error. Antico brought Kennedy home with another bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error to plate. Mitchell Daly walked, and Zach Zubia followed with a single to left-center to bring home Antico and move Daly to third. Melendez walked to load the bases for Williams, who singled to center to drive in two runs.
A five-run Longhorn third busted the game open, giving Texas a 10-0 lead. Silas Ardoin started the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second. Antico drew his second walk of the game and Daly was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A fielder's choice brought Ardoin home, then Melendez walked to reload the bases. Williams was hit by a pitch to bring in another run, then Hodo cleared the bases with a 3-run triple to right-center.
Fairfield (39-5) got on the board in the third with back-to-back one-out doubles to score their first run, then tacked on another run after a throwing error to make it 10-2.
In the fifth, Melendez singled to left with one out, then Williams and Hodo were hit on back-to-back pitches to load the bases. Trey Faltine delivered a single through the left side to plate two more runs to make it 12-2.
Lucas Gordon came out of the bullpen in the seventh and forced a groundout to end the inning and Cole Quintanilla followed with a scoreless eighth. Aaron Nixon threw a scoreless ninth to close out the regional.
The 33 runs scored during the regional are the second-most scored by the Longhorns since the current four-team regional format began in 1999 and the most since scoring 58 runs over five games in the 2005 Austin Regional.
Texas will host either South Florida or South Alabama in the Super Regional at UFCU Disch-Falk Field next weekend. At this time, the Super Regional game dates and times are still pending but the best of three series will be played either June 11-13 OR June 12-14.

If any tickets remain, single session tickets priced at $15 will go on sale online the first day of the Super Regional at 9:00am.
