AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Baseball head coach David Pierce has been named the American Baseball Coaches Association Central Regional Coach of the Year, the organization announced Thursday.
Texas finished the season tied for third at the College World Series and won 50 games for the first time since 2010. Coming out of the loser's bracket in Omaha, the Longhorns finished just one game shy of the CWS Finals after winning three-straight elimination games.
The Longhorns posted a 17-7 record in league play and won their second Big 12 Conference title in the last four seasons. Pierce was named the league's coach of the year and 13 total players were named to the All-Big 12 teams.
Under the guidance of Pierce and his staff, Texas had the nation's best team ERA with a 2.93 mark and finished with 566 strikeouts, the most by a Longhorn team since 2011. Texas also had its best offensive output in at least 10 years, batting .275 with 126 doubles, 68 home runs and 92 stolen bases.
This is Pierce's second ABCA Regional Coach of the Year award, after he was named South Central Coach of the Year in 2012 while at Sam Houston.
