Seven different Longhorns managed at least one RBI while helping Texas to 2-0 in the fall season
AUSTIN, Texas – On Friday night at Red & Charline McCombs Field, Texas softball improved its fall record to a perfect 2-0 by registering 16 combined hits while downing St. Mary's, 8-1 (10 inn.).
Major Players
Freshman infielder Leighann Goode (3-for-6, run, double, RBI); sophomore transfer utility player Baylea Brandon (3-for-4, double, RBI); sophomore utility player Vanessa Quiroga (2-for-3, two runs, double, two RBIs); redshirt freshman outfielder Ashton Maloney (2-for-5, three runs, walk, double); junior utility player Courtney Day (1-for-2, walk, RBI); junior infielder Camille Corona (1-for-2, run, RBI); freshman utility player Maddie Pomykalski (1-for-2, RBI); junior designated player Jordyn Whitaker (1-for-3, RBI)
The Details
After Texas left two stranded in the bottom of the first on a Brandon double to center and a Courtney Day walk, St. Mary's threatened by loading the bases against Longhorns sophomore transfer pitcher Mac Morgan in the second. The Creighton, Mo., native wasted little time battling her way out of the tough early jam, however, by registering two big strikeouts to leave the bags packed.
The Rattlers eventually grabbed the lead against sophomore reliever Sophia Simpson during the top of the third as free passes and a Texas defensive miscue combined to grant St. Mary's a 1-0 advantage.
The Burnt Orange & White answered right back in the bottom of the third to deadlock the contest at 1-1. Sophomore outfielder Mya Holmes kicked things off by drawing a leadoff walk. After Lou Gilbert fielder's choice, Goode stepped to the plate and launched a two-out, run-scoring double to center.
A combination of Simpson, junior relievers Logan Hulon and Estelle Czech and freshman hurler Citlaly Gutierrez combined to quiet St. Mary's bats from adding any more runs to the board the rest of the way.
With Maloney standing in scoring position, after a leadoff walk and a Corona sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the seventh, Pomykalski delivered a clutch single to center for a RBI to push Texas back in front, 2-1.
Texas' offense finally erupted to take control of the game in the bottom of the ninth, plating four runs on six hits to boost its lead to 6-1. A Maloney leadoff double to left and RBI singles from Corona, Quiroga, Whitaker and Brandon combined to do the major damage for the Horns.
UT finalized its offensive output at eight tallies during the bottom of the 10th on the strength of a Quiroga RBI double to left and Day's RBI base knock to center.
