No. 19 Men’s Golf claims a win and a draw on day two at Big 12 Match Play Championship

The Longhorns earned a 3-3 tie against TCU and followed with a 2-1-3 victory over Iowa State on Tuesday at Houston Oaks.
HOCKLEY, Texas — The No. 19 Texas Men's Golf team rallied for a 3-3 tie against TCU in a match that was not completed on Monday night and earned a 2-1-3 victory over Iowa State in Tuesday's afternoon session on the second day of the Big 12 Match Play Championship at Houston Oaks. The Longhorns enter Wednesday morning's final pool play match with four total points, tied with K-State for third in Pool A. Texas Tech and TCU are tied for the lead in Pool A with seven points entering Wednesday's morning session.
With one match unfinished from Monday afternoon's session and Texas trailing TCU 3-2, freshman Keaton Vo returned early Tuesday morning to finish out a 2&1 victory over Jacob Skov Olesen to help the Longhorns rally for a 3-3 tie in the team score against the Horned Frogs.
In the afternoon session against Iowa State, senior Travis Vick registered a dominant 6&5 victory over Hunter Johnson and freshman Christiaan Maas added a 3&1 win against Luke Gutschewski. The Longhorns also received ties from freshman Jacob Sosa, sophomore Alejandro Gonzalez and Vo against the Cyclones.
Texas, who received a bye in Tuesday's morning session, will conclude pool play against No. 1 seed Texas Tech on Wednesday at 8 a.m. Central. The Big 12 Match Play Championship consists of pool play for two-and-a-half days (five sessions) with a final round played on Wednesday afternoon. Match play format will be utilized during all rounds, and each team will consist of six players.
The Longhorns, seeded No. 4 for the tourney, are in Pool A with No. 1 seed Texas Tech, No. 5 seed K-State, No. 8 seed TCU and No. 9 seed Iowa State. During pool play, each team will play four matches. Teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. At the conclusion of pool play, teams will be ranked 1-5 within their pool based on the amount of points accrued.
During the championship round on Wednesday, the championship match will feature the team with the highest point total from Pool A against the team with the highest point total from Pool B. The third-place match will be between the teams with the second-highest point totals from their respective pools. Each team will participate during the championship afternoon. This marks the fifth year of the event.
Texas ties TCU, 3-3-0
- Freshman Keaton Vo held a 1-up lead thru 15 holes over Jacob Skov Olesen when play was suspended on Monday due to darkness. Starting on hole 6 on Monday afternoon, the match was tied thru 14 holes before Vo won hole 2 to grab the 1-up advantage before play was halted. The match resumed at 8 a.m. Central on Tuesday, and Vo claimed a win on hole 3 to build a 2-up cushion. Vo halved hole 3 to close out his 2&1 win.
Texas defeats Iowa State, 2-1-3
- Senior Travis Vick posted a dominant 6&5 victory over Hunter Johnson. Starting on hole 2, Vick won hole 4 to take a 1-up lead. After the two players halved the next four holes, Vick won holes 9, 11, 12, 13 and 14 to close out the 6&5 victory.
- Freshman Christiaan Maas added a 3&1 win against Luke Gutschewski. Starting on hole 3, Gutschewski won the opening hole and held a 1-up lead thru the first four holes. Maas responded by winning holes 7, 8 and 9 to grab a 2-up lead. Gutschewski claimed wins on holes 12 and 14 to even the match. Maas answered by winning holes 15, 16 and 1 to finish out the 3&1 victory.
- Freshman Keaton Vo claimed a tie against Paul Beauvy. Starting on hole 3, Vo won the second hole to take a 1-up lead. Beauvy answered by winning holes 5, 7, 8 and 9 to take a 3-up advantage. Vo responded by winning holes 11, 12, 13 and 16 to grab a 1-up lead. Beauvy won hole 17 to even the match, and the two players halved the final three holes.
- Sophomore Alejandro Gonzalez earned a tie against Nate Vance. Starting on hole 1, Gonzalez won the opening hole and held a 1-up lead until Vance claimed wins on holes 6 and 7 to grab a 1-up advantage. Gonzalez won hole 8 to even the match. Vance claimed a win on hole 10 and held a 1-up lead thru 14 holes. Gonzalez won hole 15 to even the match, and the two players halved the final four holes.
- Freshman Jacob Sosa posted a tie against Lukas Pany, and senior Mason Nome dropped a 5&4 decision to Kyo Morishita.
