No. 9 Men’s Golf completes first round at Amer Ari Invitational

Hammer, Nome and Thomson each post a 2-under 70 in Thursday’s opening round to pace the Longhorns.
WAIMEA, Hawaii — The No. 9 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 3-under-par 285 on Thursday to stand in 14th place after the opening round of the Amer Ari Invitational at Hapuna Golf Course. Senior Cole Hammer and juniors Mason Nome and Will Thomson each posted scores of 2-under-par 70 to pace the Longhorns, and all three are tied for 32nd place on the individual leaderboard.
The 19-team field at the Amer Ari Invitational includes 10 squads that are ranked in the Top 20 of the latest Division I Bushnell Golfweek Coaches poll (Nov. 19).
No. 2 Arizona State fired a 20-under-par 268 and holds a five-stroke cushion over a trio of teams that includes No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Texas Tech and No. 20 Washington at 15-under-par 273. Arizona State teammates Mason Andersen and James Leow share the individual lead after the first 18 holes with a 7-under-par 65.
The Amer Ari Invitational continues with 18 holes each on Friday, Feb. 4 and Saturday, Feb. 5. Texas will be paired with Hawaii-Hilo, North Carolina and San Jose State for Friday's second round, and tee times will begin at 11:30 a.m. CT (7:30 a.m. HT) with a shotgun start.
The Lineup
- Senior Cole Hammer carded a 2-under 70 and is tied for 32nd place. Hammer posted four birdies and had an eagle on the par-four 1st hole on Thursday.
- Junior Mason Nome recorded a 2-under-70 and is tied for 32nd. Nome tallied five birdies on Thursday.
- Starting on the 6th hole, freshman Alejandro Gonzalez found himself at 5-over through his first six holes. He recovered to post birdies on holes 14, 16, 17, 2 and 3 to post an even-par 72 and is tied for 60th.
- Junior Travis Vick registered a 1-over 73 and is tied for 70th. He carded five birdies on Thursday.
- Sophomore Randall Fojtasek recorded a 6-over 78 and is in 104th place. Fojtasek posted an eagle on the par-five 3rd hole on Thursday.
- Junior Will Thomson, who is competing as an individual at this event, fired a 2-under 70 and is tied for 32nd. He registered six birdies during Thursday's opening round.
