No. 16 Men’s Golf places third at Southern Highlands Collegiate

Cole Hammer records a 5-under 67 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for second at 11-under-par 205.
LAS VEGAS — The No. 16 Texas Men's Golf team recorded a 10-under-par 278 on Tuesday to finish in third place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club. Senior Cole Hammer fired a 5-under 67 for the second straight round and paced the Longhorns with a season-best tie for second in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 11-under-par 205 (71-67-67).
The Longhorns posted a three-round team score of 29-under-par 835 (281-276-278). No. 1 Oklahoma won the team title with a 54-hole score of 38-under-par 826 (268-282-276), while No. 4 Pepperdine claimed second at 31-under-par 833 (273-287-273). The 15-team field at the Southern Highlands Collegiate included seven squads that are ranked in the Top 25 of the latest Division I Bushnell Golfweek Coaches poll (Feb. 18).
Hammer paced a trio of Longhorns who placed in the top 10. Junior Travis Vick carded a 54-hole score of 9-under-par 207 (69-69-69) to tie for seventh place, and junior Mason Nome registered an 8-under-par 208 (68-69-71) to tie for 10th.
Oklahoma's Patrick Welch claimed individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 14-under-par 202 (66-69-67) to finish three strokes ahead of a group of five players that included Hammer at 11-under-par 205.
Texas returns to the course when it competes at the Arizona N.I.T. on March 18-19 (Friday-Saturday) in Tucson, Ariz.
The Lineup
- Senior Cole Hammer fired a 5-under 67 for the second straight round to finish in a season-best tie for second at 11-under-par 205 (71-67-67). His previous best finish was a tie for seventh at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational (Sept. 17-19). Sitting at 1-under through his first 10 holes, Hammer closed Tuesday's round with four birdies over his last six holes (13, 14, 16 and 18).
- Junior Travis Vick carded a 3-under 69 for the third consecutive round to tie for seventh place at 9-under-par 207 (69-69-69). Vick recorded four birdies and an eagle (par-five 9th hole) on Tuesday.
- Junior Mason Nome tallied a 1-under 71 in the final round to tie for 10th at 8-under-par 208 (68-69-71). Nome carded a 4-under 32 on the front nine and registered five birdies on Tuesday.
- Senior Parker Coody recorded a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to tie for 32nd at 1-under-par 215 (73-71-71). Coody was 2-over through his first 10 holes but rallied to notch three birdies over his last six holes (13, 14 and 16).
- Freshman Alejandro Gonzalez, who competed as an individual at this event, registered a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to tie for 50th at 2-over-par 218 (71-70-73). Starting on hole 10, Gonzalez was 5-over through his first 11 holes but rallied to post four birdies over his last six holes (4, 5, 8 and 9) to finish at 1-over on the day.
- Junior Will Thomson recorded a 7-over 79 on Tuesday to place 84th at 37-over-par 253 (92-82-79).
