No. 13 Men’s Golf tied for fifth after opening day at Arizona N.I.T.

TUCSON, Ariz. — The No. 13 Texas Men's Golf team registered a two-round total of 16-under-par 560 (280-280) on Friday to rest in a tie for fifth place after the opening day of the Arizona N.I.T. at OMNI Tucson National (Catalina Course). Senior Cole Hammer paced the Longhorns with a 36-hole score of 9-under-par 135 (68-67) and stands in a tie for sixth place on the individual leaderboard entering Saturday's final round.
The 15-team field at the Arizona N.I.T. includes seven squads that are ranked in the Top 25 of the latest Division I Bushnell Golfweek Coaches poll (March 11).
No. 3 Oklahoma State tallied a 41-under-par 535 (266-269) and holds a 21-stroke cushion over tourney host Arizona at 20-under-par 556 (277-279). No. 1 Oklahoma and New Mexico are tied for third at 18-under-par 558. The Longhorns enter Sunday's final round just four strokes out of second place in the team standings.
Oklahoma State's Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra owns a one-shot lead in the individual standings after a two-round total of 12-under-par 132 (65-67) on Friday. A trio of golfers that includes Adrien Dumont de Chassart of Illinois, Oklahoma State's Aman Gupta and Sam Choi of New Mexico are at 11-under-par 133.
Hammer led a trio of Longhorns who are in the top 20 on the individual leaderboard after the opening 36 holes. Junior Travis Vick is tied for 15th with a 36-hole score of 5-under-par 139 (70-69), and junior Mason Nome is tied for 17th at 4-under-par 140 (70-70).
The Arizona N.I.T. concludes with 18 holes on Saturday, March 19. Texas will be paired with New Mexico and No. 7 Pepperdine for Saturday's final round, and tee times will begin at 10:15 a.m. Central (8:15 a.m. Pacific) off the first hole.
The Lineup
- Senior Cole Hammer paced the Longhorns on Friday with a 36-hole score of 9-under-par 135 (68-67) and is tied for sixth in the individual standings. In his opening round, Hammer started on the back nine and was even-par at the turn. He had five birdies against one bogey over his final nine holes to card a 4-under 68. During his afternoon round, Hammer posted four birdies and one eagle (par-4 third hole) against just one bogey en route to a 5-under 67.
- Junior Travis Vick is tied for 15th after a two-round total of 5-under-par 139 (70-69) on Friday. He tallied three birdies against one bogey while carding an opening-round score of 2-under 70 in the morning. Vick started his afternoon round with an eagle on the par-five 10th hole and a birdie on the par-four 11th. After back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18, he rallied to record three birdies against one bogey over his final nine holes for a 3-under 69.
- Junior Mason Nome is tied for 17th, recording a 36-hole score of 4-under-par 140 (70-70). He carded three birdies against one bogey en route to a 2-under 70 in the morning. Nome registered four birdies against a pair of bogeys during his afternoon round of 2-under 70.
- Senior Parker Coody is tied for 61st after a two-round total of 2-over-par 146 (72-74). Coody was 3-over through the first five holes in his opening round before playing the final 13 holes at 3-under for an even-par 72 in the morning.
- Freshman Alejandro Gonzalez is tied for 71st with a 36-hole score of 4-over-par 148 (74-74).
